BUNDESLIGA ROUND 16: HERTHA 6 - 0 GLADBACH
Hertha put six past Gladbach
A crowd of 40,000 in the Olympic stadium in Berlin on Saturday afternoon saw Hertha achieve their second ever highest win in the Bundesliga, as they thrashed Borusia Mönchengladbach 6-0 in round 16 of the Bundesliga. Hertha’s previous highest win was a 9-1 thrashing of Borussia Dortmund in 1970. The win extends Hertha's unbeaten run of games to six.
Billy the kid strikes again!
The healthy home crowd saw a first half almost void of goalmouth action. Both defences stood firm and cancelled out each others attacking attempts. It took until the 38th minute for the deadlock to be broken. Gilberto crossed from the left and the veteran Christian Ziege cleared the ball into the path of the advancing Billy Reina who scored his first goal for Hertha since February from ten meters out. That strike allowed the home side to control the game until the break.
Fiedler stunning save…Rafael makes it two
After the break the Gladbach coach Advocaat brought on his striker Sverkos for Demo. The move looked to have paid off as Ziege unleashed a terrific shot which Fiedler brilliantly saved. Second later Hertha went two goals up, as Nando Rafael got the ball on the halfway line. The Angolan-born goal-getter sprinted to the edge of the Gladbach area before scoring with a shot which went in off the foot of keeper Kampa.
Goal glut
Rafael’s strike on 54 minutes proved to bet he turning point of the game. After that the visitors fell apart. On 63 minutes good work by Marcelinho was finished off by Madlung who scored unmarked from close range. Hertha turned on the style and two goals by Yildiray Bastürk inside 8 minutes followed. The Turkish midfielder’s first was set up by second half substitute Fredi Bobic, his second was the result of a one two with Marcelinho.
Cheeky spot kick
Nine minutes from time Hertha was awarded a penalty after Marx was fouled in the Gladbach box. Up stepped Marcelinho to cheekily stroke the ball home after Kampa had committed himself. The only negative news of the afternoon was the fifth yellow card shown to Joe Simunic, who will be suspended in round 17.The win extends Hertha’s unbeaten run to six matches…the best run in the Bundesliga. In round 17 Falko Götz and Co. travel to Hanover, who deservedly beat HSV 2-0 in the AOL Arena.
