Hamann still has Cup hope
by Chris Ives -

Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann says he is still hopeful of making his country's World Cup squad in 2006.

The 31-year-old former Bayern Munich star was a regular for his country under Rudi Voller but has failed to get a game since Jurgen Klinsmann took over the reins this summer.

Despite this setback Hamann is still upbeat about his chances of appearing in his second World Cup finals.

"I have spoken to Jurgen Klinsmann and I agree with his policy of giving youngsters a chance at the present time," Hamann told SportBild.

"But I have still far from given up on any hope of making the squad for the World Cup in my homeland," he added.

Hamann also hinted that he could be looking to leave Anfield after playing only a peripheral role under Rafa Benitez this season.

"I will talk to the club in January and then discuss things with my wife before making any final decision," he added.

Benitez hinted at the end of October that Hamann would be handed a new deal, so it remains to be seen if the German extends his stay at Anfield.
