Wiese out for months
by Chris Ives - Last Updated 29 Nov 2004
Kaiserslautern goalkeeper Tim Wiese will be on the sidelines for several months after damaging cruciate knee ligaments on Saturday.
The 22-year-old custodian fell awkwardly during the second half of Lautern’s crucial 3-0 home win over Freiburg and had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher.
A post-match examination revealed the extent of the injury.
The news comes as a great blow to The Red Devils, as they attempt to stave off the threat of relegation, but coach Kurt Jara has already expressed his complete confidence in Wiese’s understudy, the experienced Thomas Ernst.
“Against Freiburg, Thomas once again showed that we can rely on him,” Jara said.
“This was also the case when he deputised for Tim in the last three games of last season when it was a matter of life or death - as far as relegation was concerned.”
German youth international Florian Fromlowitz, 18, will take Ernst’s place on the Lautern bench until Wiese returns to fitness.
