Klinsmann set to consider Scholl

Mehmet Scholl's return to the spotlight as a Bayern Munich supersub may yet earn the 34-year-old a surprise recall to Germany's squad in time for the 2006 World Cup.
Scholl came off the bench after 28 minutes to replace the under-performing Bastian Schweinsteiger in Tuesday's Champions League clash with Maccabi Tel-Aviv.

The long-serving midfielder was the outstanding Bayern player in the 5-1 win, directing the midfield with evident class, and Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann was impressed.

'If Mehmet plays the joker role like that he will be a topic for consideration for the World Cup, although there is a lot of time between now and then,' Klinsmann said.

'I'm pleased to see his performances. He's always been a player of instinct, one who can supply a surprise.'

Scholl played alongside Klinsmann in the side that won the 1996 European Championship in England. He made the last of his 36 international appearances for Germany almost three years ago in early 2002.

I'm a big fan of Mehmet Scholl, but i don't what's the point of him being called again... he will be 36 by the time the world cup starts. If he is called now he would be occupying the place of the young players we need for the world cup...

Also, how can he be considering a 34 player and not a 32 year old Neuville who is in great form?

scholl can give the creative spark for a comeback..

he is a great "joker".. he could come on in a game when germany is down 0-1 and completely rejuvenate the attack..his creativity and skill with the ball is amazing...

i say why not as long as he is just a SUB.. his injuries and age would make him useless in starting 11, leave that for a younger player

Yes, I guess it would be cool for him to be called for some friendlys in the near future. He would make lots of fans happy ( me included ) with his dribbling and feints.

But as 36 year old, he has no place at the World Cup.

Thats what they said about Cafu and yet it looks like he will be there for wc 2006.

I have no problem with a 36 year old sub who can change a game. He brings a lot of expierence and creativity to the team. If I remember correctly, Mehmet turned his back on the NT in 2002 and that's my issue with him. A NT player should be open to playing for his country during good times and bad, not only the good.

If I recall, I believe he had just come back from an injury and was not sure he would be in the best of shape for Germany. Also let's not forget he has not initiated this, but Klins did

It's suprising to see that from Brazil. They're a talented country with lots of players, but most of all.. Brazil usually force out their players once they're old and bring in these super youngsters.

scholl is much2 classier than neuville. at his best he's at least at the same class as our great mid such as moller n ballack. that's why kilnsi has a soft spot for him i reckon... i always think that he along with jeremies, babbel and ziege were very2 good players. they're all pretty old now and past their peak with loadsa injuries along the way.

to the point, if scholl prove that he's still up to it b4 the world cup, i'd say why not. esp he could play the cameo appearances as 75th min sub who injects creativity.

I agree that he is in the same calss as Moeller and Ballack. In 2000-2001 he was our best player. I think he never reached his potential in the NT team and that is our loss.

I think Scholl is good as a subs...but calling him back to play for the NT is not a good idea...maybe Klinsmann can include him for a farewell match like Italy did for Baggio.

Baggio should have played in EC2004 but that is another thread.
