Bayern Munich eased to the knock-out stages of the UEFA Champions League following a 5-1 thrashing of Maccabi Tel Aviv and the Bavarian giants singled out veteran Mehmet Scholl as man of the match. Scholl, who had missed large parts of the season due to injury, replaced youngster Bastian Schweinsteiger in the first half and set up goals for Hasan Salihamidzic and Torsten Frings after Claudio Pizarro had given the hosts an early lead. "There was never any doubt about who was going to win the match and the result reflects our superiority," declared Bayern Munich legend Franz Beckenbauer. "Mehmet Scholl was sensational when he came from the bench." Uli Hoeness echoed the Kaiser's comments by praising the work the 34-year-old's performance on Tuesday. "Mehmet was in great form and we are very happy to have him in our squad," said Hoeness. "He is one of the players who can make a difference in any game and it's good to know that he can turn around a match when being brought on from the bench."
