Tottenham Hotspur are one several English clubs to have taken an interest in Sparta Rotterdam attacking midfielder Ricky van den Bergh.

The 24-year-old has been in fine form in Holland's Gouden Gids Divisie, having scored 13 goals for Sparta so far this season, and Spurs have already sent representatives to watch the attack-minded player in action.

Martin Jol's side, however, are just one of four English clubs to have monitored the player's progress recently.

Championship sides Leeds United and Nottingham Forest have all had their scouts out to watch van den Bergh while League One side Barnsley have been closely with the player as well.

Van den Bergh's exploits has also attracted the interest of various clubs in Europe and beyond, with American Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire having already been rebuffed with an offer for the player.

Belgian sides Anderlecht and Club Brugge, Greek giants Panathinaikos, German side Nurnberg, Italian club Perugia and fellow Dutch side AZ Alkmaar have had the midfielder watched as well.

Despite the interest, Sparta spokesman Wesley van der Stan told skysports.com that only the Fire have made a formal bid for van den Bergh.

"We had an offer from Chicago Fire that was in September, but it was not high enough to take it seriously," van der Stan told skysports.com.

"Barnsley did not make an offer. They were at the stadium to see him play, but they did not make an offer or an enquiry."

The attack-minded midfielder is reportedly valued at more than €500,000 by Sparta and the Rotterdam club are unlikely to let the midfielder leave on the cheap.

His current contract runs until 2006 and it remains to be seen if any interested club will try and lure him away from his current employers in the near future.
