Do Footballers Play Too Many Games?

that is the question

I don't think they do, The most the ever play is 2 games a week. Thats 90 minutes a game. (plusinjury time) they get paid millions so really they should be able to do anything!!

I dont think so either. Although we have more competitions now, we also have bigger squads.

I dont agree with the xmas break either.

the xmas break would mean that they stop and start in the middle of the season when they could be 'on a roll' and very hard to pickup again. imo

Definately not, as said they get paid millions to be of a high fitness level and be able to play 40 games a season for the average player.

Very rarely will any of them play over 45 games of competitive football in a season (GKs aside).

I would play 100 games of competitive football for the wages the're on!

2 games a week = 3 hrs of hard work. Most normal people work 36 hrs + so they can't exactly claim they are getting hard done by...plus they earn in a week what people get in a yr so there's no excuses for tiredness

I agree with most so far that they do not play too many games, however, I do have some sympathy for the players in terms of all the travelling they do.

When the European competitions are on the players are constantly travelling and living in hotels before flying back home to play 48 hours later.

OK so it's not like working down the pit, but footballers today are athletes and this cannot help to get them at a level of peak fitness.

Joining Leeds Pioneer in this discussion. It's easy to say they make enough....bla bla. OK they do but all the traiviling is very hard. You fly to three places in Europe in a week, you'll be exhausted, also playing 90 minutes is not only 90 minutes if you get me. It takes a time too cool down end rest the muscles(sometimes takes two days..) and the preperation takes time. bullying at playes is easy, my granny can do it...

until any of us have played thier schedule we cant put them down...even when i used to play twice a week for 10 weeks i could feel my body take the strain... i think that european finals and such should be shortened so the domestic leagues and national teams dont suffer...if they keep playing too many games the star players will miss games due to injury, and that will affect the quality of football we watch.

No they dont, they get paid lots of cash to play top class football, yet they winge .You could ask anyone on this site if they wanted to play professional football, and they would say yes because it is a dream for anyone of us to play football .We would do it coz we love football and for nowhere near the wages that some of todays 'Superstars' get every week.At most they only play 2 games per week thats 180 minutes of they're time, oh dear thats hard work is'nt it.Sorry forgot training, but thats all about your fitness and todays players are supposed to be fit anyway,so they are only topping up what they have already got.

this question arises because lots of England players were tired before the World Cup, i think footballers who are going to play in the World Cup, should not always have to play 90 minutes towards the end of the season, so this problem only arises every 4 years.

The top Brazillian based players play up to eighty matchesa season now that is too much, on the other hand people like Linford Christie have often made disparaging remarks about the fitness levels of footballers in fact he said that Paul Gascoigne was not as fit a county level shot putter, even in these days of stricter diets a lot of them are still piss heads, the amount of Villa Blues and Albion players I have seen out in bars getting bevied beggars belief. They say have a short career that why they should be paid so much but a lot of them dont look after themselves. If its so tough being a footballer let them get a job on minimum wage with kids to support because if they couldnt play football that is what most of them would be doing.

They have no reason to complain about the amounts of games they play. They get payed too much for it as well

Basketball players have to play 82 games a season and thats not including Playoffs i think they're rightly payed. If we want to talk about travelling we can when these bball players have to travel around North America playing 3-4 matches a week. Thats a lot of travelling when you consider that England is the same size as Florida

No not normally, but they should reduce their to commitments to their clubs when their country calls for them.

The bigger names ie the likes of Beckham and Owen seem to have enough time for extra curricular activities which also earn them vast amounts of money so they should shut up about being tired.

A lot of the England players blamed fatigue during the World Cup , but Roberto Carlos of Real played more than any of them & had a great World Cup. It all boils down to the fact that the average English player isnt fit enough. Too many games?? My arse :eek
