missery for the lions....
TSV 1860 Munich 1-2 Hamburg SV: FT Report
PA
MUNICH, April 17 (Bundesliga) - Hamburg piled more misery on 1860's poor season with two second half goals to leave Munich's second club only one point and one place above the relegation zone.
The game seemed destined for a 0-0 draw with neither side capable of opening the deadlock until Nico-Jan Hoogma headed home from a free-kick after 64 minutes.
Mehdi Mahdavikia grabbed a second with 10 minutes to go to secure the win, and although 1860 did pull one back through Paul Agostino in the dying minutes, 1860's only real consolation was in Borussia Monchengladbach's late equaliser against Hertha Berlin, meaning 1860 avoided falling into the bottom three.
Hamburg's players apologised to their own fans for their poor away form in last weekend's match programme but failed to find the answer on the pitch as they fell to a 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund.
In Saturday's programme, it was the turn of 1860 Munich's players to write a similar apology to their long-suffering supporters, who have witnessed only five wins at the Olympic Stadium all season.
Whether it was the spring heat or just the nerves of being embroiled in a relegation battle, the home side were unable to find any rhythm in the first 45 minutes and had three speculative efforts from Benjamin Lauth, Daniel Baier and Lance Davids to show for a disappointing start.
Hamburg were equally bereft of ideas going forward, although Germany international Christian Rahn looked impressive on his return from injury.
His header from Milan Fukal's cross after only 90 seconds was the closest either side came to breaking the deadlock in the first period, but even that was several yards wide of Michael Hoffmann's right post.
Things took a turn for the worse for the Lions after 18 minutes when their top scorer Lauth left the field injured and his loss may be critical during the run-in.
With fellow strugglers Kaiserslautern and Hertha Berlin both leading at the break, 1860 knew they needed more than a point to keep their heads above the water, but it wasn't until the hour mark that they created their best chance of the game.
The energetic Baier rose inside the penalty area to head a right-wing cross from Agostino just inches over, but it proved to be a false dawn as Hamburg struck the first blow just minutes later.
Rahn swung a left-footed corner towards the far post and Hoffmann mistimed his jump, leaving captain Hoogma with an easy header which bobbled over the line before a home defender to hack in clear.
The home fans were claiming a penalty in the 78th minute when Andreas Gorlitz went down in the corner of the box under a heavy challenge from Tomas Ujfalusi, but referee Uwe Kemmling waved play on, allowing Hamburg to push forward and grab a second.
Sergei Barbarez launched a quick counter-attack to give David Jarolim the chance to close in on goal from the left.
Having shifted the ball onto his stronger right foot, Jarolim tried to power his shot past Hoffmann, but the 1860 'keeper parried the effort to the feet of substitute Mahdavikia, who had a simple tap-in from six yards.
With the home side seemingly destined for the bottom three, they pushed forward in numbers to try and grab something late on.
And Agostino's fourth goal of the season with three minutes remaining made for a grandstand finish.
The Australian international powered a header from a Jiayi Shao corner into the roof of the net.
However, it was too little too late as Hamburg held on to only their third away win of the campaign.
