Ailton eyes Muller's record
Tuesday, 16 March 2004

by Patricio Figueroa
Werder Bremen striker Ailton says he wants to break German legend Gerd Muller's Bundesliga goal record of 40 goals in a season.
Muller hit the magic mark back in 1972 for Bayern Munich and the Brazilian has his sights set on the 32-year-old landmark.

Ailton currently stands on 22 goals in 24 games as Bremen lead the rest of the German top-flight and says he has Muller's record in his sights.

"At the moment I have scored many goals and if I continue in that way I could reach the amount of 40, why not?" said Ailton.

"I have the luck that I play in a team like Bremen because all my team mates help me for being able to score so many goals so frequently.

"If they wouldn't play in that way I wouldn't have scored half the goals I have."

it will be difficult...
bremen plays more carefully/defensive after the winterbreak.
ergo scoring less goals.
And I couldnt imagine seeing AILTON standing infront of Gerd Müller in the alltime, goals in one season, category...
But if that would happen...
That would be like McGuire breaking the 50 year or so old HomeRun record
Yeah just unbelieveable....

Eh Mainz-nice to see M Friedrich is one of your favourite players.
It is great to see him back after two cruciates-do you think could he play for Germany one day ?
Will he play for Bremen next season ?

This forum is great for talking to different fans.

If he will have no more bad injuries it's possible for him to play someday for the national team. It's really surprising how fast he get back in the team. But it will be different for him to get a place in Bremens starting line next season, because Ismael and Fahrenhorst are good defenders, too. I hope that Bremen loan him a second season, if Mainz will be promoted to Bundesliga

Funny, thats an insult to german football???

Whats the new news, i heard that FIFA canceled Ailton´s Quatar citizenship and has stand limitation, that player must live at least 2 years in his new "homeland" to be able to play for it...

He can't play for Qatar anymore, Fifa put an end to that, so his nationality is not in question anymore :clap

Cannot believe that this is the same Ailton I once knew in Mexico. He was such a bad player, everyone was shocked when he left Tigres in the middle of the season and went to Germany.

Ailton fumes at Fifa

by Patricio Figueroa
Brazilian striker Ailton has slammed Fifa for introducing new rules which would stop him playing international football for Qatar.
The Werder Bremen man has already agreed to play for Qatar, but Fifa were worried about the number of players looking to play for the Gulf state.

The fact that Qatar is willing to pay their players handsomely to represent them did not sit right with Fifa who have quickly changed the criteria for playing international football.

"I am really angry," blasted Ailton. "I am so angry that I could leave Germany. I don't understand why Fifa has taken this decision, which is the problem?

"I have been told that some people from Germany have asked Fifa to take this decision but I don't understand why these people have done this.

"I only had the wish to play for a national team for once in my life because I will never be called to the Brazilian national team.

"Personally it wasn't only a financial choice, it was a very good experience that I was going to live."
