Two goals from Tommy Smith in extra time booked Sunderland's place in the quarter finals of the FA Cup after a deserved 2-0 over Birmingham at St Andrews. Smith came off the bench to strike a goal in each period of extra time and set up a quarter final meeting with Sheffield United at the Stadium of Light.
Birmingham dominated possession in the first half, but failed to create many clear goalscoring opportunities. Clinton Morrison had a couple of opportunities for Birmingham with a shot that Mart Poom tipped over the crossbar and then a shot straight at the Estonian custodian. The hosts created the best chance of the half seconds before the interval when Mikael Forssell played Morrison in on goal, but Poom stood up well to keep out the striker's shot with his legs.
Sunderland started the second half brightly and should have broken the deadlock on 53 minutes when John Oster broke down the right and sent over an inviting cross for Marcus Stewart six yards out, but the striker somehow flicked his header wide of the target. The Division One side squandered a great chance five minutes later when Stephen Wright got in behind the Birmingham defence to round Maik Taylor but he delayed his shot allowing the home side to get men back to clear the danger.
Sunderland came close to going in front seven minutes from time when an Oster free kick from the edge of the area deflected off Kenny Cunningham and seemed to be heading goalwards before Taylor produced a tremendous reflex save to keep the ball out. Neither side could manage to find a goal in normal time and the game was forced into extra time.
Sunderland finally did break the deadlock nine minutes into the first period of extra time with Smith blasting home from close range after Taylor had palmed Kevin Kyle's shot onto the crossbar. Birmingham piled forward in search of an equaliser, but Smith made the game safe with a superb second ten minutes into the second period of extra time as he raced past the home defence before coolly slotting the ball past Taylor.
Well, I thought Bham would have won this!!

Right it's Rant time!
First let me say im taking nothign away from Sunderland, in short they wanted it more than us and i have to give them credit for it.
Now to us, what a total and utter f**king shambles, a divsion 2 team would be embarassed with a performance like that!!, when a player had the ball no one was moving for him to pass it too causing them to hoof in up the pitch to the strikers, considering both Morrison and Forssell are both shortarses this never had a hope of working and the Sunderland defenders got everything in the air, we were totally devoid of ideas and passion they thouth they only had to turn up to win and get punished for it.
Was the worst performance i've seen in 11 years of going to blues it was totally gutless i canb't even pick a man of the match it was that bad, normally after bad games you don't single out players for being c**p but im too p**sed off for that so i give a special slagging off to Johnson, Clemence, Kenna, Hughes and Tebily, especially Jeff Kenna he is 36 and old, slow and basically s**te! and has been for a few games now retire now before you make a name for yourself as an idiot like Seaman.
and considering the wing back's were a shambles why on earth doesnt he play Martin Taylor more ? we have £1.5 million sitting on the bench doing nothing., why exactly did you buy him for ? play him he can't be any worse than what was out last night!.
and with Dunn and Lazaridis out on the left for the forseeable future please drop that W**ker Hughes he is simply not up to premiership standard, give Carl Motteram a go he has been by far the best players in the reserves this year and how will you know he isn't any good if you don't give him his chance ?.
Bruce is also to blame for poor team selection in some cases after the villa game but at least he regonises when he's made a mistake and will weld the axe if his boot up the a**e doesn't make any difference.
Hope this wa just a freak one off performance, if not thank f**k were all but safe already!.
Rant over

If you actually watched the match Foley, which I seriously doubt, (I did because I was there) you would've seen a wonderful second half display by Tranmere, they were all over Millwall, for only Eugene Dadi missing a sitter in the dieing minutes am in no doubt Tranmere would've won in extra time :salute
