Hey Schalke!
First I thought you would be a true Schalke fan from Germany.. but apparently you´re from Australia :??
Schalke and Dortmund are the biggest teams in Westfalen (Germany) where I lived for a year. I remember every Saturday (and Sunday morning) all the railway stations were full of drunken, singing Schalke fans! :laugh Where ever you went in Northern Germany - there were the partying, drunken Schalke supporters!! HAHAHA

I don't think man utd fans are glory hunters, its just that most kids see them at the top of the league and naturlly want to support a team with international superstars. Believe it or not man utd fans in asia are just as passionate as fans in england. We should be proud of our supporter base. And yes i'm a man utd fan, my life resolves around man utd.

I have supported United since the late 50s; through rain, hail, snow and relegation to follow my team. Hitch hiking all over the country as I did not have enough for fares AND a ticket. Not eating for 24 hours at a stretch. Even going to a home game on my wedding day. Glory hunters are in every club at every level - but dont DONT tar us all with the same brush. Yesterday I saw a WBA shirt on a kid; first time in months - they must be winning!! Before Ridsdale came to Leeds; they were nearly down and out, suffering horrendous gates, games etc - where were the loyal Leeds fans then? They deserted in droves; that is not loyalty. But now they are back "on top" so to speak; they are the "look at us" fans; back filling the ground. In defence of Man Utd; our ground has been near enough full every game irrespective of which division; opponents etc.

if you look at it most people either support their local side or the team which was the top of the league when they started having an interest in the game....
Red Devil
Mar 27 2002, 12:02 PM
I agree up to a point. I was "dragged" up on Merseyside. To my memory, all my mates were split - most I think seemed to be Everton, closely followed by Liverpool and Man Utd. Several Tranmere Rovers too. I used to "support" Tranmere when they were down in the old 4th then go to United matches on a Saturday. At the risk of incurring the wrath of all you Liverpool fans, in my experience, most "fans" on Merseyside in the 60s and 70s, yes and the 80s, were United. I say "fans of" but not necessarily going to matches. A mother of a girlfriend of mine in Crosby was a United "fan". United had then many more "fans" than Liverpool or Everton put together - truly! I don't know about now. There were in my school also Spurs fans, a Burnley fan and some Chelsea. The majority of scarves, as I recall, were blue! As for actual match going supporters then the figure changes to 1. Liverpool 2. Everton 3. United. Tranmere fans were mainly based on other team supporters, like myself, going to Prenton Park on the friday night before going to their "own" teams games on a Saturday. Therein lies a lesson to other "lower" teams in the vicinity of big clubs - play your home games on a day other than the "big" ones and attract a goodly percentage of theirs too.

if you look at it most people either support their local side or the team which was the top of the league when they started having an interest in the game....
Or the even dumber reason for supporting a team -- it was the boyfriend du jour's team when you started following football...usually out of self-defense.
Oh well, I'm not kicking. I love my Gunners!! And that affair is proving to last longer than the b/f. :)

well, tout le jour means everything.......properly translated to all the world

'du jour' literally means of the day, in context the sentence means...boyfriend at the time.
Education today? I despair :) :)
Anyway, I'm a liverpool fan and havent been to a match for more than 15 years though I was a regular at the games from the early 70's to mid 80's. Saw the greats from Keegan through to Dalglish.

Its definitely not the first time I have heard it, but I don't have to like it - it stinks (pardon the pun) of petty jealousy. You do your club proud I am sure being such a good supporter through thick and thin so why pick on Man Utd with such a stupid "nick"................... We weren't so much unlucky, there was a bit of bad luck, we was just rubbish, compared to our usual game......
Right, ok I apoligise for the "Man Ure" comment and as you say I do follow my team through thick and thin. I wouldnt have it any other way. I thought the goal coming right before half time killed you lot off TBH. A bit of a sucker punch

I support Tottenham.
I think the Spurs are the biggest club in London, and they have the biggest fanbase in England.
Spurs are sleeping giants. OK. We aren`t to good on the pitch right now. And we have NEVER had any SUSTAINED success to prove that we can be deserving of the respect of Man UTD, Liverpool & Arsenal (Oh.. their trophy cabinets might be bigger, but that means Jack)
But, just like Hitler, who thought that the world belongs to him. Just like the Jews, who can think that they can occupy a whole country, make the owners live in squats and make them look like the bad guys. Just like the Moslems, who think that their way of life is the correct way, and everyone else is doomed to hell. SPURS ARE DESTINED FOR SUCCESS (KARMA)
PS. NO OFFENCE MEANT TO THE GROUPS REFERED TO ABOVE. I WAS SIMPLY BEING IRONIC

Well, you've got one right here. And from the same country
as you.
One of the easiest thing to do in Canada is mess with
United fans' heads. Despite the rdiculous amount of
silveware they gt in recent years, they're a pretty sad
case. Most of them can't even name half of their own first
team squad (Ole who?). Some of them look at us in disbelief
when we tell them there's two teams in Manchester. Some
pretty good support indeed.
You know what they say about Irish pubs ? There is one in
every city in the world. I think the same with City fans:
there might be only one in town, but they know much more
about the game than any glory hunter.

The Mighty....................Oldham *cough*:D <img src='http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/park/yfh45/oldham8.jpg[/img] that's a pic of my stand, I sit in the second section to the right, right on the edge nearest that box at the back (furthest right is sectioned off as away end is yards away :) ) although Oldham isnt my "local" team, it's the most accesable ground to my house, more accesable than rochdale who I whom also follow on occasion's when I can! Been a Latic since I was 4 so since 1989, in 1990/1991, we beat Sheff Wednesday on the last game of the season to win the old division 2, I went wembley for the first time with latics in 1990, we lost one-nil to nottingham forest, we were of course in the premiership and dont regret not jumping on another team's bandwagon. and of course in 1994 a certain semi final game against man u which I wont mention what happened, too badder memorie's not a very nice memory of my last visit to wembley! and it seem's to have been a downfall ever since, until now! wouldnt support anyone else, I think united fans who dont ever get to a game or fans of premiership teams who never get too games will ever feel like I do as my club! I may you may have your arguement's but until you have been watching a team 12 years week in week out home and away near enough every single match, bring's a tear to your eye, even beating West Ham this season if that had been in the premiership I wouldnt have celebrated that win half as much! giant killing is the greatest feeling in the world of football!!! :clap
