Deisler on the road to recovery
21.12.2003 | There was festive cheer for Bayern and their fans at the weekend with the news that stricken midfielder Sebastian Deisler is making excellent progress in his battle against depression.
"We reckon he'll be able to resume light training by the beginning of January at the latest," general manager Uli Hoeneß revealed to fcayern.de, "I wouldn't like to give an opinion as to when he'll be fit for the full training programme, but I am totally, 100 percent certain Sebastian will play football for us again."
Deisler has been receiving in-patient treatment from the psychiatric department of the renowned Max Planck Institute in Munich for around five weeks. "We're completely in the picture regarding Sebastian's health - and at the moment the reports are very positive," Hoeneß continued.
The Germany international is well enough to leave the Institute for periods lasting up to a number of hours, the mass circulation Bild tabloid has reported, and has also moved house together with his pregnant girlfriend Eunice from the suburbs in Grünwald to a new location in the city centre.
Hoeneß saw recent developments in a highly optimistic light, especially as the initially sensational press reporting has now died down. "A lot of the distractions around him have gone away, so he's totally focused on regaining his health," the club official commented, adding he believed "Deisler will come back and be an even better player than before. The doctors are saying that defeating this illness might give Sebastian even greater strength and confidence."
On behalf of Sebastian's fans and supporters, fcayern.de wishes the player a happy Christmas and all the best for 2004.
