....that still the top English striker in the country (on goals) is Alan Shearer and yet he is not going to the World Cup. Has England run out of prolific goalscorers ?

Alan Shearer is a quality forward still and I would love to see him come out of retirement for the World Cup but I wouldn't say it was 'worrying' that he is the leading scorer. We're looking to the future now and players like Owen certainly have the ability to be better and have proved they can do as good a job both domestically and internationally.

But Owen has scored less goals than Shearer despite Shearer only starting to play just before Decemeber. Now I know Owen is a prolific goal scorer but that means we have one we used to have about 5. What happens if he ges injured in our first match. England are screwed.

Oh dear another media guided sheep. He has scored 115 goals for Newcastle despite having 2 season out. He has scored over 20 goals in all those seasons except the two when he was out injured when he scored 7 goals. Remember this is Newcastle alone. He is already over the 20 mark this season when he also missed a few months out after his surgory.
So lets go back a bit further to his blackburn times when he scored over 30 goals each season between the 93/94 season up to the season where he left join us ( he scored 28 goals in his first season with us)
So how far do we go back to find out when he hasn't scored 20 goals in a season despite having played a full season. We go back to the 90/91 season at Southampton where he played 48 games and scored 14 goals. Still think he's not good enough. I could also mention the fact that he is the Premiership all time leading goalscorer and in his total he has played 545 games and scored 288 goals. Yes this the man the press think lost it when he moved to Newcastle has played 216 games and scored 115 goals for us alone. Crap player and not worth taking taking to the World Cup, I don't think so.

AgGGGHHHH :) I know he's not, that's not my discussion (I only went on about Shearer because someone said he couldn't be used for England when in fact he could be and be very useful) my point is England have only one prolific goalscorer and yet nobody seems to find this a problem for England which really does suprise me.

Shearer is stubburn.

He won't change his mind, and I for one am glad about that.

Newcastle has gained from him not playing for England.

I think he could easily still cut it for England, and if he turned around and said that he wants to play for England again, Eriksson would call him up in a shot.

He'd be fantastic to take to the world cup, with his experience, and leadership (although for what it's worth I reckon Beckham is fantastic as England captain. Possibly better than Shearer. I was very sceptical, but I've been proven wrong.).

Anyway back to Shearer,
He loves England, but he loves Newcastle even more.
Which is why he's done what he's done.

Shearer is probably the best English striker for a generation, possibly only Lineker could rival him.

How can you say he is rated too highly, just look at his record.
