View Full Version : George Burley - Manager of the Year 2001
Anyone know if there are any other Manager's Of The Year that have taken their side to relegation the following year? (Assuming and all that...)

Yeah, explains the lack of logic in the decision. Imagine if Fergie had been houllier and burley won it

Because how many managers bring their team up from the 1st division and then qualify them for europe at the first time of asking by spending less than £6Million?
THAT is why Burley won it.

I know I'm biased, but I think it was about time that they gave the award to someone who has done some managing and not just give it to the manager who wins the league.
Having said that Liverpools cup treble would have also been a worthey winner.

I know it is...I made it!
Can't agree - The Manager of the Year Award was devalued beyond repair by the result and should be renamed 'The Nice Guy but still a Loser' Award.
Can you imagine if you were a manager and you win the manager of the year award this coming year. Would you say to yourself, great - now I can be compared to George Burley. Most, I expect would instead prefer to be compared to a winner, not a loser.

Good answer Pioneer.
Mogo, your only bitter because Houlier didn't get the award, anyway most of the managers were pleased for Burley, even Fergie said it was a good choice.

Manager of the year - best use of the players and resources available to you, that is why George Burley won it last year. I'm not a 100% certain but didn't Ipswich win the championship in the early sixties and were relegated the following season.

Fergie was drunk as usual. So when LFC win the PL & CL I suppose Moyers will get it for keeping Everton up????

Nearly, but not quite (and I had to go check). Ipswich won the First Division in season 1961/62. The following season they finished 17th (while Man Utd went down hahaha) but the next season 1963/64 they finished bottom and were relegated.
It will be interesting to see who will be this years "MOTY"? Maybe Sam Allardyce should be in the running for his amazing feat of getting to the top of the premiership earlier this season?
I luv a wind up :cool

If all else fails, rely on the "Fergie gets what he wants" argument.
