Goalless draw

VfB made two changes to the starting line-up that took to the field in the 1-0 win over Rangers FC in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday in the match in Bochum’s Ruhrstadion. Christian Tiffert and Jurica Vranjes came into the side for Fernando Meira, who was still suspended and Alexander Hleb, who is out ill. Vranjes teamed up with Silvio Meißner in defensive midfield with skipper Zvominir Soldo dropping back into defence to replace Fernando Meira and Tiffert playing on the right side of midfield.
With three minutes on the clock Bochum’s midfielder Thomas Zdebel fired the first shot of the game, but the midfielder put his effort wide of the VfB goal. This chance was to remain the only one for a very long team. Both team neutralised each other in midfielder and hardly ever managed to get the ball into the penalty area.
In the 27th minute Kevin Kuranyi had the second chance of the game after a pass from Philipp Lahm, but the German international put his long range effort over the bar. Over at the other end Vahid Hashemian put his header well wide after a cross from Dariusz Wosz and Bochum’s goalie Rein van Duijnhoven safely collected an Imre Szabics shot from outside the penalty area.
Harmless headers from Kalla and Hashemian

VfB goalie Timo Hildebrand got his first touch of the game ten minutes from half-time, when Raymond Kalla headed straight at VfB’s number one.
Seconds from half-time Vahid Hashemian failed to get behind a cross from Sören Colding properly and headed well over the VfB goal and therefore the scores stayed tied when the referee blew his whistle for the break. Both sides managed to play some good football at times, but failed to create any real chances.
Both sides returned to the field unchanged for the second half. Vahid Hashmian tried his luck with an acrobatic overhead kick early in the second period, but sent the shot well wide and Sunday Oliseh’s free-kick also failed to trouble VfB goalie Timo Hildebrandbecause the former Nigerian international put his shot over the bar.

Bochum look the better side

Kevin Kuranyi came close to giving Stuttgart the lead after 53 minutes, put the striker headed just wide after a cross from Horst Heldt.
Only the hour Vahid Hashemian hit the outside netting after a mistimed cross from the left and over at the other end Horst Heldt was unlucky to see his shot blocked away for a corner by the Bochum defence.
Midway through the second half VfB were slightly lucky not to fall behind, Paul Freier sent a cross in from the right and Peter Madsen was left with an open header, but the striker put his effort wide. VfB team manager Felix Magath then decided to look to a third striker in Ioannis Amanatidis and took off Horst Heldt. Nonetheless Bochum looked the better side, but they failed to create any real chances. Seven minutes from the end Sören Colding tried his luck from outside the area, but his side never reached Timo Hildebrand because Colding’s team-mate Vahid Hashemian got in the way and blocked the shot.

In the end VfB managed to take a point from the match. Stuttgart were in control of the match for a long time even without Marcelo José Bordon, Fernando Meira and Alexander Hleb and hardly allowed Bochum any real chances. Thanks to a good allround performance Stuttgart managed to get a deserved draw.

Quotes on the match

VfB team manager Felix Magath: "We didn't play the same sort of football that won us the hearts of the fans in the last few weeks today. We were well organised and tidy at the back, but up front we lacked fire power. I like that it is quite normal after qualifying for the next round of the UEFA Champions League."
VfL coach Peter Neururer: "We are obviously pleased that we managed to keep our unbeaten home record alive. Both sides showed a great tactical display and we had some good chances, just remember Peter Madsen's header.
It was definitely one of the better 0-0 draws that I can remember against a very good side. Both teams tried to play attacking football. Stuttgart only settle for the draw in the last few minutes."

VfB goalie Timo Hildebrand: "I was happy that I didn't have that much to do today because the last few weeks have been tough. I must compliment the team on a gritty performance. We could have won here with a little bit of luck.
I had expected Bochum to put us under pressure from the word go, but both teams had a lot of respect for each other and we had to replace a very important player in Alexander Hleb."

VfL midfielder Sunday Oliseh: "We didn't have a very good game against Bremen last week and we definitely improved today.
We have to be realistic about the goalless draw. VfB Stuttgart are one of the best teams in Europe at the moment."

VfB striker Kevin Kuranyi: "I am finding it somewhat hard at the moment. I am trying to perform well and always give it my best shot. I am sure that I will score again soon because I deserately want goals. Maybe I'll have to take more time in front of goal.
We will do everything we can to stay on top of the Bundesliga until the winter break."
