WHAT THE PAPERS SAY

Headless chickens

Berliner Morgenpost

"Headless chickens" was the way Huub Stevens described the Hertha defence following the unnecesary 2-4 defeat away to Kaiserslautern. "They're all internationals playing like they're in the school team,” fumed Dieter Hoeneß. Normally, public criticism is not part of Hertha's make up, but the sixth defeat of the season brought everything to the boil: "We have five players well over six-feet tall, I can't believe that Klose can score with one header after another," moaned Niko Kovac.

Justified criticism

Dieter Hoeneß and Huub Stevens weren't finished there: "Gabor Kiral y could have caught their first goal with his cap," said Hoeneß. Kiraly himself: "Okay I was at fault with their first goal, but one goal shouldn't make a team fall apaprt," said the keeper. Stevens was even more angry with the man-mountain defender Joe simunic: "Did he think he was in their area? Or why did he start trying to dribble?" Fumed the coach.

TEAM NEWS

Bobic and Hertha...a mismatch?

Fredi Bobic had imagined things to work out differently. In his "front room" of all places (he has scored 6 goals in 7 matches at the Betzenberg stadium), the German international striker was banished to the bench. He was brought on in the 74th minute (for Luizao) but by then Hertha was dead and buried. It was the first time since joining Hertha from Hanover at the start of the season that Bobic has been forced to watch the action from the substitute’s bench.

What it meant to him was clear to see, as the other players on the bench went through their warm-up routine...Bobic sat motionless on the bench.

"It's about the team and not about Fredi Bobic", said the Hertha manager Dieter Hoeneß.

Bobic and Hertha...a mismatch?

Bobic and Hertha...a mismatch? the fact is that Bobic is a striker who relies on service from midfield in the form of crosses into the box. When Bobic receives this kind of service, goals are as good as guaranteed.

Bobic is a target man

Bobic is not however, the kind of striker who dribbles or waits to counter attack. he is a classical target man. Hertha was well aware of this when they signed him: "It was not a decision against Fredi Bobic, but one in favour of Raphael Nando. You can't play at the Betzenberg with two out and out strikers, that's why I chose Nando, who played well in the first half," explained the Hertha coach Huub Stevens.

He didn't in the second half though...

What does Bobic himself say about the situation? Bobic: "I have to accept it, but if I was to feel a sense of satisfaction after the defeat I wouldn't be right in the head."

HERTHA DOWNGRADES ITS SEASON TARGET

Dieter Hoeneß: Realistic

Hoeneß: "Bundesliga survival top priority"

At the start of this season the Hertha team gave out a much-publicised statement saying that their goal for the season was to qualify for Champions League football. 13 matches later with only 11 points from a possible 39 to its name, Hertha have no chance whatsoever of achieving that goal. Yesterday saw the second gathering of Hertha members at the International Congress centre in Berlin.

Closer together

It was surely one of the more unpleasant chores for the Hertha manager Dieter Hoeneß. He announced that following the disappointing 2-4 loss away to Kaiserslautern on Sunday, the club must downgrade its target for the season from Champions League qualification to pure survival in the Bundesliga. Hoeneß claimed that the recent happenings at Hertha have made the team move closer together.

In regards to Hertha's new team "goal", I was fearing this about a month ago.

It seems that we're pulling a Leverkusen this season.

You people are very rude. At least some of you.

By the way, Stuttgart bandwagon fans are despicable.

The club from a capital city should always be strong in their domestic League, its healthy for football.

That is bullshit and you know it. The French league seems to be quite healthy even without PSG doing that well.

I'm sure you're really sad that Hertha is losing as well.

it is sad to see Hertha struggle, but in no means do they suck

they are a top half level team who is having a run of bad form right now. I think if they manage to string together 2-3 wins in a row they will regain thier confidence and get back to the top half of the league by the end of the year.

in no means are they in trouble of relegation

PSG are one of France's biggest clubs regardless of current League positioning.

And Hertha isn't one of Germany's biggest clubs just because they are on a losing streak? Doubtful.
