Ricky “Hitman” Hatton Vs Aldo “El Galan” Rios

By Jim Cawkwell

A prizefighter at the highest level enters the ring to win for himself, but he carries in his fists the pride and adoration of his thousands of followers. They generate the intensity from which the fighter may draw additional strength and courage to steady his nerve in those final moments before battle. In turn, his success is vicariously theirs. These symbiotic relationships also manifest the trademark colors and identity shared by both fighter and fan. The light welterweight division has no shortage of exceptional fighters and colorful characters.

Zab Judah plays the brash Brooklyn bad-boy to perfection. His fast hands and feet in the ring perfectly complement his motor mouth and image of fast cars and money outside the ring. Ben Tackie wears his native Ghanaian colors along with the tribal facial scars, which are inherent from his countries tradition. And world champion Kostya Tszyu’s rich and diverse cultural background affords him support from Korea, Russia and his adopted home of Australia, all of which he represents with pride.

But the new generation boasts different colors.

Spearheading the onslaught of the new wave of ten stone terrors is our very own Ricky Hatton. Adorned in the light blue that is his signature and that of his half of the great city of Manchester, England that beholds him as its most prodigious puncher. With the majority of the world top ten light welterweights currently accounted for, Ricky will make the tenth defense of his WBU title on the 27th of September at the MEN Arena in Manchester against Aldo Rios. The contract is out on Rios who will have to exceed the distinction of his own alias to survive a visit from the Manchester Mafioso.

Aldo Nazareno Rios aka “El Galan” (The Gallant) was born in Centenario, Neuquen in Argentina where he has compiled all of the victories in his 34-2-0 (6KO) record. The 29 year old is further distinguished as the current South American lightweight champion. He has forged a reputation as a good technical orthodox boxer with extreme regard to defensive skill. In fact in his only two losses, which came away from home, not even two of the world’s finest lightweight champions in Stevie Johnston (WBC) and Artur Grigorian (WBO) had any success in trying to break him down. He was the man waiting in the wings to step in this past April had Vince Phillips refused to compete against Ricky, this proves that he is always in shape to fight at even a moments notice. That he has had full training preparation for this fight makes him even more of a concern.

But Ricky Hatton seeks to succeed where other fighters have failed. A stoppage victory is the order of the day and if achieved it would not only signal Ricky’s complete return from his brutal encounter with Phillips, it would also fire a warning shot.

A timely reminder to would-be opponents that Ricky Hatton is very much in business and stalking his way toward the divisions marked men. Manchester’s ever faithful will be on hand once more to witness their cold-blooded assassin in action.

And when all is said and done, their voices will echo his name throughout the arena as the highlight reel projects the images of Ricky’s destructive power to the boxing world watching.

A rising force…still undefeated :clap

HATTON-RIOS PREVIEW

Ricky Hatton makes the tenth defence of his WBU light-welterweight title on Saturday night knowing that he can’t afford to slip up against unheralded Argentinean Aldo Rios.

Rios may not be well known outside of his home country, but Hatton only needs to give Scott Harrison a call to hear about the dangers of fighting Latin Americans everyone expects you to beat.

In July Manuel Medina gave Harrison the run around in a fight those in the know - even Medina’s most loyal supporters – thought the Scotsman would win comfortably.

Hatton is an equally strong favourite to inflict Rios’ third professional defeat, and ridiculously long odds are available on the 29-year-old to cause a massive upset.

That probably won’t happen as he doesn’t possess the punch to disturb the big-hitting Hitman – but then Medina isn’t renowned for his power.

And, as always, Hatton is haunted by the spectre of a TKO loss because of his tendency to cut up badly.

In fact, he picked up a particularly nasty cut in his last fight against Vince Phillips that required extensive surgery and a number of stitches.

In that fight Hatton looked the business as he dealt with a tough, former world champion in style, with the cut only one of two negatives.

The only other thing lacking from a near-perfect performance was a knockout, but you can’t always have everything.

Hatton will want a KO on Saturday night against a man who brings a reputation of toughness to the ring.

He may only have gone the 12-round distance five times in his 37-fight career, but he also has 12 10-round fights to his name.

Rios is a fighter who is built to last, and just like Medina combines is a cagey, skilful customer.

He has mixed in high-class company before, losing on points to Stevie Johnson and Artur Grigorian in WBC and WBO lightweight title fights respectively.

Fighting Hatton in front of 20,000 people at the MEN Arena will be another step up though, and Ricky has the tools to overpower Rios.

Against Mikhail Krivolapov – a canny Russian who knew how to stick around – he was able to change his game-plan to come up with a ninth-round win.

The sensible prediction is for Hatton to will in around the eighth, by which time Rios will have had enough of the Hitman’s merciless body shots.

That would represent a good night’s work for Hatton, who will just want to get this fight out of the way.

With Showtime – not present on Saturday night - planning to televise him again in December, he won’t want to make any mistakes.

And with Junior Witter boxing on the under-card – and likely to be watching the main event from ringside – Hatton won’t want the embarrassment of any mistakes being highlighted by his fiercest rival.

WITTER GETS KINUTHIA

Junior Witter will defend his Commonwealth light-welterweight title against Fred Kinuthia at the MEN Arena on Saturday night.

The Australian-based Kenyan has an 8-2 record, with his only two defeats coming by way of close points- losses, one of which was to former IBF king Phillip Holiday.

Kinuthia, who stayed in Australia after boxing for Kenya in the 2000 Olympics, is hoping to set up a shot against domestic rival Lovemore Ndou with victory.

And the 34-year-old’s trainer Terry Fox reckons he can achieve it.

"Witter bobs and moves around like Prince Nassem does so Fred has to stay alert and keep moving," Fox told the Adelaide Review.

"This is a big fight for him. It's the next best thing to a world title and Fred's going to give it all he's got."

HATTON ON THE WAGON

Ricky Hatton has ditched the booze ahead of his WBU light-welterweight title defence against Aldo Rios at the MEN this Saturday.

And he reckons his new diet has helped in make the 140-pound limit like never before.

“I have gained muscle yet I have never got down to the weight so comfortably as I have for this contest,” he told the News of the World.

And Hatton says he has new dietician Kerry Kays to thank.

”He maintains that there is no way alcohol is going to help my career and, if I’m going to have a drink, nights out should be few and far between.

”He’s told me to show more willpower and to put my boxing first.”

Patient Hatton wears down Rios

Press Association

Ricky Hatton finished off Aldo Rios after nine rounds at the MEN Arena to complete a successful 10th defence of his WBU light-welterweight title.

Hatton decked the Argentinian in the final seconds of the round and referee Micky Vann accepted the challenger's retirement on his stool.

Hatton had floored Rios in the opening 30 seconds of the contest with a flash left hook but his opponent frustrated the champion for large parts of the contest.

But a left and right combination in the ninth dropped Rios for the second time and ensured Hatton became the first man to stop him in his 39-fight career.

It was the 24-year-old Hatton's first fight in six months following plastic surgery and he did enough to set up a bigger challenge in his next fight in December.

Promoter Frank Warren insists he is having major difficulties in tempting the world's best light-welterweights to Manchester but knows he must deliver in December when Hatton is due his next defence in front of the American television cameras.

Hatton is prized as a major talent by the influential Showtime head Jay Larkin but the American cameras were not iN manchester and Larkin has called for Hatton to step up in class.

Ironically it may be Hatton's considerable drawing power in his home city which is holding him back.

It is understandably tempting to keep Hatton at home and presumably some of his prospective top-level opponents are aware of his - and therefore their own - worth.

In the meantime Hatton is only too happy to keep knocking over the opponents Warren does put in front of him.
