Champions Bayern Munich went into the game at Schalke 04 having failed to win any of their last six games before the winter-break – and they were soon in trouble again.
Belgium striker Emile Mpenza put the Royal Blues ahead just after the half-hour mark and partner Ebbe Sand added a second within two minutes. There was more woe for the Bavarians when Michael Tarnat was sent off on 41 minutes.
Germany midfielder Mehmet Scholl got the visitors back into the game shortly after the break but Jorg Bohme restored Schalke's two-goal advantage within five minutes and Marco van Hoogdalem added a fourth before Niels Oude Kamphuis completed the rout in the closing stages.
The 5-1 victory was sweet revenge for Schalke as the Bavarians had pipped them to last year's title with an injury-time goal from Patrik Andersson.
The defeat leaves Bayern in fifth place, eight points behind Bayer Leverkusen, while Schalke are in seventh, two points behind the Bavarians and ten points adrift of the leaders.
All is not well for the German & European Champions, but looking good for Man U who gotta ply them soon :)
