Sunday's successful trip to Hamburg was hardly done and dusted before Ottmar Hitzfeld turned his gaze to Bayern's next task: the holders travel to fourth division Borussia Neunkirchen this Saturday to begin the defence of their DFB Cup title.
"I'm definitely going to make a few changes," the Bayern coach announced ahead of the game in the Saarland region, "but I can't yet say how many new faces will appear in the team. The goal here is to give as many players as possible some match practice."
Thomas Linke and Zé Roberto have already been ruled out with injury. "Linke is still suffering with an Achilles tendon problem," Hitzfeld explained, while Zé picked up a knock after one of Collin Benjamin's many fouls in Hamburg. The Brazilian was complaining of muscle stiffness as well, "but otherwise I'll pick from a full squad," the General announced.
Mehmet Scholl is back in contention for a starting place after watching the Hamburg match from the bench. "I think he'll play," Hitzfeld confirmed. And there could be first outings of the season for Roque Santa Cruz and Martin Demichelis.
Hitzfeld urged his second string squad players to push hard in training. "The Neunkirchen game is definitely a good reason for them to put themselves forward this week," he observed.
Training should be worth watching this week in Munich...
