View Full Version : The English Premier League is no Longer the No.1 of the world !

Every July it is possible to make the first assessment of the relative strengths of the various leagues. The methodology for determining the current strength of the national leagues is unchanged since 1991 and has proved to be a sensitive and accurate indicator. It also takes into consideration that, because of the national and international schedules, the South American and West Asian leagues are better placed in the first half of the year and those from Northern and Eastern Europe less so. The current trends by area are as follows:

A)
It may cause a sensation but the reality is that the English Premier League has shown a drop in performance not previously seen in the first decade of the 21st Century. At the beginning of the year the English league had a lead of 110 points ahead of the Spaniards. In the month of July the Spanish Primera División was ahead of the Englishmen by 94 points. That means, for example, that the English clubs must achieve seven more wins than the Spanish clubs in the UEFA club competitions by end of the year if the English league is again to be the No.1.
B)
The trend shows that the Spanish Primera División is on the way to becoming the strongest league in the world. But the gaps to the next placed national leagues are small. And the Italian Serie A has clearly benefited from the triumphal march of "Inter". In comparison FC Bayern München - Germany‘s showpiece team - lost too many matches on the way to Madrid, so this affected the points of the German league.
C)
A similar drop in performance to the Englishmen took place also in the leagues of the Ukraine and Romania. Negative trends have also been shown by the national leagues of the Netherlands, Turkey and Greece while the leagues of Portugal and Belgium remained as constant.
D)
The Brazilian Serie A is still the strongest league in South America, but the Argentinean Primera División has reduced the gap to the Brazilians. Remarkably the Peruvian Primera División takes the 3rd place in the South American leagues at present. But the margin of points to the chasing leagues from Chile, Paraguay, Ecuador and Uruguay are very small.
E)
In Central and Northern America, the Mexican league at No 1 is well clear. But the clubs of the MLS disappointed in the CONCACAF Champions League, following the USA league is now in 88th place. The league from Guatemala is currently ahead of those from the USA, Honduras, El Salvador and Costa Rica, the No.2 in this region. But the margins of points are extremely small, so the positions behind the Mexican Primera División can change almost weekly.
F)
Egypt again has the strongest African league, ahead of the leagues of Algeria, Nigeria, Tunisia, Libya, Angola and Morocco. The Egyptians, Algerians and Tunisians have reverted to the old order. There are currently five North-African leagues among the "Top 60" in the world.
G)
While the national league from Japan, Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan have maintained their good placings from end of the year 2009, the leagues from Iran, Kuwait and Qatar have achieved sensational improvements. The Japanese have the best-placed league in the world ranking at present. The impact of improvements in Asian football has taken place gradually and has become apparent in the national leagues, above all in Syria and Vietnam as well as in other Southeast-Asian countries.
H)
In Oceania the margin of points between the leading league (New Zealand) and the other leagues has reduced. But heading the pursuing leagues, ahead of the expected leagues of Tahiti (119th) and Fiji (123rd), is Papua New Guinea league (116th). That is a result of national champions PRK Hekari United unexpectedly winning the Oceanian Champions League.

I disagree with this line of reasoning and I've been saying this for ages...that the EPL is a great league but grossly overrrated. If we use EPL supporters usual arguments, like the one quoted above...the claim that EPL clubs have dominated the CL is by virtue more teams in the latter stages of the competition, this is hollow and a myth. In the years of "perceived" dominance, how many teams from the EPL actually won the CL and compared with teams from La liga and Serie A in the last 10 years? Or 20? Equally how many FiFA or european Players of year have been from EPL during this period? The facts dont lie, Italy and Spain are historically and recently the best countries on the greatest stage in Europe.

Its time to get over it. The few world class players in it are leaving. EPL is better marketed, highly competitive, physical and can be a bloody good watch, but certainly not the best in the world. CL and World Cup tournaments are proving this...

The EPL is overrated but La Liga and Serie A are no better. All of them are overhyped to some extent, with the EPL having older players and losing some of its superstars, La Liga is Real and Barcelona and Serie A has little quality beyond Inter.

I'm not sure what pleasure people get from saying one league is better than the other. No amount of stats will prove one way or the other either.

I think what people are saying is that its not about which league in necessarily the best in the world, rather, that the EPL isnt

06/07- 3/4 semi finalists from epl. Milan end up being champions
07/08- 3/4 semi finalists from epl. Final is all english too. Man U champions
08/09- 3/4 semi finalists from epl. Barcelona win it (help from ref against chelsea)
09/10- 1 french, 1 spain, 1 german, 1 italy. Internazionale are champions.

These are the "recent" facts in europe. And the epl is obviously on top. Id go back to 05/06 but thats to far back to go if you want to talk recent years. Although if you want to i think barca won that year against finalists arsenal.

You're talking a load of BS, how is the EPL on top when its winning that counts?

Because it's league not TEAM, that is why even though Italy has won twice in the past few seasons, no one can possibly consider them on top when every other Italian team during that year sucks.

The EPL is the best league in the world in terms of the overall product.

1) The fans fill the stadia, I think only the German Bundesliga beats the EPL in attandance.

2) The "enviriment" is friendlier for fans. Women and Children are comfortable attenting games whereas in Spain and Italy there are still clowns making monkey noises for example.

3) The EPL has a better vision with regards to a global audience. La Liga games are impossible to watch live in Asia and Africa because they are broadcast way too late. Now La Liga may care only about Spanish fans and not a global audience but there is no doubting that the EPL profile overwhelms that of any other league around the world.

4) Broadcast $$$ is distributed more effeciently among clubs in England than in Spain. That's why the likes of Tottenham are able give the traditional big guns the middle finger when they come knocking for players while the likes of Valencia are forced to sell their best players. It's also why investors are choosing second rate English mid-table clubs (man City) instead of top level clubs elsewhere in the world.

That's the overall picture. When it comes to quality on the field, La Liga is undoubtedly the best in the world.

1) More Champions League titles.
2) More World player of the year titles.
3) More great players as opposed to hyped players.
4) More entertainment. I honestly watch both leagues equally and have never, ever been entertained by any EPL team outside of Chelsea, ManU and Arsenal while I've seen some breathtaking things from the likes of Mallorca.

But what you put on the field doesn't necessarily make the entire product the best.

Best league football = Spain
Best league = England

You make a good point, because of Sky. The English league and players are marketed excellently across the globe. That's why we have 12.30 on Saturdays here. It's prime time Tv in Asia. So undoubtedly the clubs are going to make more money, meaning more big stars to grace our league. No league is stronger than the premier league this season. Its all about opinion though, if you like highly tactical games where players have high technical ability then Serie A your place. If you like Short passing games, lots of goals La liga. High tempo entertaining games, then the premier league.
