Olympiacos Cruise to Record Home Win in Front of Empty Karaiskaki
An empty Giorgos Karaiskakis Stadium couldn't stop Olympiacos FC from notching yet another emphatic victory as the Piraeus giants recorded a 6-1 victory over KS Besa Kavaje on Thursday night. Dudu and Enzo Maresca both scored twice for the Erythrolefki, while Matt Derbyshire and Ioannis Fetfatzidis both added a goal each. Besa's Dimitrije Lazarevski notched a reply for Besa, but the goal was no more than a consolation as Olympiacos ran out 11-1 winners on aggregate.
The lack of atmosphere at Karaiskaki could have prompted Olympiacos' dull performance in the opening forty-five minutes in Piraeus as the port city side looked relatively flat as Besa piled men in defense to stymie Ewald Lienen's side.
Olympiacos, with most of the possession, couldn't generate the quality of chances that earned them a 5-0 win in the first leg as Besa's stubborn defense kept Olympiacos from test Besa ‘keeper Edvan Bakaj.
Scoreless through the first frame, the second half immediately made up for the relatively dry opening in Piraeus. Olympiacos instantly took the lead in the second half as Dudu notched his second goal of the tie with a driven effort from distance. The captain for the evening showed his ability as he fired a fizzing effort to beat Bakaj to the near post.
Besa replied immediately with Lazarevski notching a leveller for the visitors as he placed his free-kick into the top corner of Urko Pardo's goal.
The level score-line last just five minutes as half-time substitute Derbyshire etched his name on the scoresheet with a finessed effort beating Bakaj to the far post.
The Englishman went from scorer to provider as his lofted pass for Kevin Mirallas nearly resulted in a goal for the Belgian, the on-loan AS-Saint Etienne midfielder looked to chip an effort over Bakaj but his effort caught the far post and bounced out. Meanwhile, Derbyshire himself looked for another goal but this time his placed effort was a bit too strong as he lifted his effort over the goal.
Sure enough Olympiacos found a third goal through Maresca as the Italian finished a play initiated by Mirallas by heading home an aerial effort past a stranded Bakaj. The Albanian ‘keeper was again stranded when Dudu tidied up in front of the Besa net by tapping home his second goal of the game.
Kostas Mitroglou, who replaced Oscar Gonzalez at the interval, struggled to find his shooting boots on the night as the Greek strike missed several quality chances including a breakaway opportunity which he skied over the crossbar.
Youngster Ioannis Fetfatzidis made his introduction memorable as he stunned Bakaj will a bullet effort after leading defenders on a zigzagging run. Mitroglou missed another chance just moments later, but Maresca was not going to be denied his second goal of the evening as he side-footed a sixth past Bakaj to wrap up yet another emphatic evening for the Greek side.
Olympiacos now look towards next week's third qualifying round first leg encounter against Maccabi Tel-Aviv as the Greek side host the Israelis in the port city on 29 July.

Olympiakos played very poorly against a side that was clearly not in their class. Maccabi defended all game and got the goal they wanted. Now Olympiakos will have to be very careful in the next match and take their chances.

Jagiellonia Białystok vs. Aris Salonika FC -- 1-2
------------------------------------------------------Toni Calvo (PK) (4)
------------------------------------------------------Toni Calvo (7)
Grzyb (24)
This performance was important for Aris for two reasons. First it showed that they have the ability to score goals and hold a lead - something they had problems with last year. Second Toni Calvo had a good game. If Calvo is on form Aris look a different team as he is their best attacking player and makes them that much more dangerous.

Roberto Colautti (42)
------------------------------------------------------Diogo (90') - Red Card
Embarassment for Olympiakos. Not so much that they lost but in how they played. Pathetically poor. Ewald Linen has already been sacked and will be replaced by Ernesto Valverde. Diogo is likely to be transferred or released now. Olympiakos is out of Europe in August.

Aris scraped through with a speculative penalty. Jagiellonia had some great chances after the 2-2 but couldn't finish them. Aris will need to be better in the next round to go through to the group stage of the competition. The good news is that Cesarec, who was quite prolific at Asteras Tripolis last year, has scored his first goals for the club.

Aris played poorly and were lucky not to concede in the first half. My guess is that they will need at least 2 goals in the next game to progress to the Europa League Group Stages.

PAOK were the better team and even with only ten men had the best chance to go up 2-0. They may regret not scoring a second though because Fenerbahce still has plenty of quality with players like Niang, Alex, Emre, etc who can make a big difference. Vierinha has been really good so far this season for PAOK in Europe.

Aris played very well and could have won by two or three goals. One of the best performances in their European history even if Atletico were a little shorthanded missing Aguero and Ujfalusi - still to thoroughly outplay the reigning Europa League and Super Cup Champions is quite an achievement.

AEK were the more talented team and it showed on the night. They faltered in the first half after conceding the penalty and were lucky not to be down a goal. However they came out in the second half and quickly turned the game around. The game was plagued by poor refereeing however as two speculative penalties and a missed offsides on the Lyberopoulos goal were the highlights of the officiating crew.

PAOK have been in a funk since the international break and it continued for the first 45 minutes of this game. Brugge were in control of the game from the start and were denied an early goal by the post. PAOK were better in the second half but it was the hosts who took the lead. Like they have done all season in Europe PAOK fought hard after conceding and levelled through a nice header by Malezas. They continued to chase the three points and were unlucky not to score at the death.
