Can Sebastian Deisler remember when he last scored in the Bundesliga? Maybe he can, even though the event occurred nearly two years ago: the Lorrach-born midfielder opened the scoring for Hertha Berlin from the penalty spot in a 3-0 victory over Cologne on 29 September 2001.
On Saturday he returned his name to the scoresheet, blasting a sensational 30 metre free-kick past helpless VfL Bochum keeper Rein van Duijnhoven with 26 minutes played. "I managed to get a hand to it, but Deisler had hit it so hard my glove fell apart afterwards," ( :o OMG! ) the Dutch netminder observed ruefully.
The super strike was Bayern's second on the day, and Deisler's first competitive goal for the club on his eleventh league appearance. The gifted midfielder spent eight months of last term sidelined with a serious knee injury, but his free-kick was symbolic of a rapidly improving form curve this time around.
"I'm finding my feet more and more, it's getting better with every game," the Germany international said after the Bochum clash. "He made sure there was a highlight in the match," Ottmar Hitzfeld enthused, "that'll build up his confidence."
"It's unbelievably good fun being part of this team," the player commented, "that sets us up nicely for the next few weeks." Coach Hitzfeld will be only too pleased to see a confident and in-form Deisler cement a place in his starting line-up.
