Bayern dismay at Depor conduct

There has hardly been a more difficult and protracted transfer saga than Roy Makaay's switch to Bayern, during which the Munich bosses had to endure the toughest of negotiations with Makaay's former employers Deportivo La Coruna and in particular their President, Augusto Cesar Lendoiro.

"We're very disappointed with Lendoiro. Once you've made a deal, you should stick to it," Bayern general manager Uli Hoeneß said on Wednesday at the official unveiling of the striker in Munich (see related report), a news conference originally scheduled for Tuesday last week but repeatedly postponed.

"On Monday last week, we closed an agreement with Deportivo, with Lendoiro's explicit approval, that Makaay could come to us for 18.75 million Euro," Hoeneß reported. Both clubs released the news the same evening.

But the very next day brought new demands from Spain :censored : Bayern would have to pay five percent of the transfer fee to Makaay's former clubs as compensation for his youth career. "And here, we managed to find a compromise with Roy and the agents," Hoeneß continued. As has been widely reported, Makaay agreed to forego nearly 1 million Euro in salary over the next four years, while the agents gave up part of their commission.

"And then, just as everything appeared settled, Lendoiro demanded that Roy forfeit his July salary from Deportivo in return for his official release to us in Munich," the club official stated. Complained fellow board director Karl Hopfner: "There were more and more new nit-picks and conditions."

Bayern have been forced to agree to a couple of "extras" over the next few years. The Munich giants will pay a one-off fee of 500,000 Euro should they win the German title in the next three seasons, with a further million Euro on top in the event of claiming the Champions League inside the next four years.

Bayern will also appear at Deportivo's pre-season Teresa Herrera friendly tournament in summer 2004 or 2005. "And if we pull out for any reason we have to pay 500,000 Euro," Hoeneß commented, "but we definitely won't be doing that."

Despite the clauses, terms and conditions, the deal has been concluded and "Makaay is eligible for all Bayern fixtures, effective immediately," Hopfner declared. And, added Hoeneß: "We've achieved our goal and fulfilled our dream of signing Makaay. From now on we'll concentrate 100 percent on football, and hope Makaay scores plenty of goals." The player could well make a start this Saturday against Bochum :clap
