Dutch striker Roy Makaay made his Bayern Munich debut on Tuesday as the German champions beat second division Nuremberg 2-0 in a friendly.

But the most expensive signing in Bayern's history, who completed his switch from Deportivo Coruna for 18.75 million euros ($21.17 million) on Friday, failed to score.

While not lacking in effort, he had only one real chance, which came in the 35th minute and was saved by Nuremberg goalkeeper Darius Kampa.

"The first game is always difficult," said Makaay, who was top scorer in the Spanish league last season with 29 goals.

Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld substituted Makaay in the 68th minute and said the 28-year-old should make his Bundesliga debut against VfL Bochum on Saturday.

"If he doesn't get injured, he will play," Hitzfeld said.

Bayern and Deportivo fought for weeks before reaching a deal on Makaay and the battle looks set to continue.

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told Tuesday's Bild daily that he felt Deportivo had used unfair means to try to stop Makaay from leaving.

"We want an official investigation," said Rummenigge, who told the newspaper that he had alerted FIFA's legal department.

Bayern, who completed their fourth domestic league and Cup double last season, hope Makaay can help them in their bid to make up for last year's shock first-stage exit from the Champions League.

Makaay's signing means either Brazilian Elber or Peru's Claudio Pizarro could be relegated to the bench.

Elber made a point on Tuesday by opening the scoring for Bayern just before halftime and playing well throughout. Germany midfielder Sebastian Deisler completed the victory after he break.

Interesting that Elber scored as today Bayern said theyd listen to offers and he said hed consider leaving....

I think after spending 18.75 million Euros Bayern will be looking to sell someone. Could be Elber, scoring or not.

2-0 win in Nuremberg
Elber and Deisler strike on Makaay debut

12.08.2003 | Record signing Roy Makaay must wait a little longer for his first goal in a Bayern shirt: the 28 year-old made a 70-minute debut appearance on Tuesday against Nuremberg but failed to find the target. A 29,102 crowd at the Franken stadium saw goals from Giovane Elber (43) and Sebastian Deisler (78) decide the warm-up fixture in the champions' favour.

As expected, coach Ottmar Hitzfeld made a number of changes to Saturday's line-up. Willy Sagnol, Martin Demichelis, Sammy Kuffour and Bixente Lizarazu, all desperately in need of match practice, made up the back four. In midfield Bastian Schweinsteiger and Jens Jeremies took over from Michael Ballack and Owen Hargreaves, while the focus up front was on Makaay, who was partnered by Giovane Elber.

After a quiet opening, the Dutch ace gave a glimpse of his potential in the 21st minute: recovering a loose ball on the edge of the box, the super striker fired in from the left but saw his effort go well wide. At the other end, Lars Müller came close to opening the home side's account on 27 minutes.

Bayern now took over command and created a number of decent opportunities against a packed home defence, but Elber's 28th minute header, Makaay's fine solo five minutes later and Demichelis' headed effort failed to trouble Nuremberg keeper Kampa, while Zé Roberto placed an 18 metre free-kick just wide on 36 minutes.

However, two minutes before half-time Bayern deservedly took the lead: Elber directed a fine header into the far corner from 14 metres from Sagnol's 43rd minute cross. The visitors led 1-0 at the break.

"It's obvious we haven't played with this formation before. Nuremberg are tackling hard at the back, we're having trouble in front of goal," general manager Uli Hoeneß said at the interval. Schweinsteiger and Demichelis failed to reappear for the second period, Hargreaves and Thomas Linke appearing instead. Meanwhile, Nuremberg coach Wolfgang Wolf made no less than nine changes.

And the second half began in similar fashion to the first, with a good 20 minutes played before the first real chances. Then, Zé Roberto made two excellent runs down the left, but neither Elber (65) nor Makaay (68) could convert.

With 20 minutes remaining, Hitzfeld then made four changes: Makaay, Elber, Ze Roberto and Lizarazu departed the action to be replaced by Trochowski, Misimovic, Feulner and Rau. Bayern were still in the process of re-organising when Brazil star Vlademir had the home side's best opportunity, but his 69th minute drive from 20 metres cannoned off Michael Rensing's left-hand upright. Fernando spurned another chance seven minutes later and the scene was set for a late Nuremberg rally.

But with just over 10 minutes left, Sebastian Deisler settled the issue, driving home from the edge of the area after a solo run leaving three defenders in his wake. Shortly afterwards Hargreaves narrowly failed to increase the advantage to 3-0 with a well-struck shot that whistled just over the bar.

Today was the presentation as i know, or was it yesterday??

Well he needs the practice, Makkay i mean, he has not played for 2 months or something like that, what do you expect, to be the topscorer in first week??

For Elber would be very nice for the club(Bayern) and him self to go to Spain and we would have his 2m€(his half year salary) for other players, tranfers, him self would be able to prepair for La Liga and to show in all his glory next year(in the season 2004/05)...
