2-2: Amoroso and Conceicao score in an inspired opener
[2.08.] In the 122nd Revier-Derby at the start of 2003/2004 Bundesliga campaign Borussia Dortmund picked up a well-deserved 2-2 draw against Schalke 04 at a sold-out AufSchalke arena. Flavio Conceicao and Marcio Amoroso scored for BVB after the home side had already established a two-goal lead from a Hamit Altintop double.
Corinna Höptner reports from the AufSchalke Arena
Scenario:
After a reasonable pre-season preparation Borussia Dortmund lost the League Cup Final against Hamburg SV and then went through some difficulties. The serious injuries by Torsten Frings and Evanilson, the transfer of Jens Lehmann and the rapid signing of Flavio Conceicao caused some commotion in the club Matthias Sammer wasn´t really looking for. Schalke 04 remained unbeaten through the entire pre-season, but didn´t really convince in the UI-Cup, either. After winning only 2-1 against Liberec, they haven´t secured the final of the competition yet. Just as his colleague Matthias Sammer, Jupp Heynkes also had to suffer some injury-related setbacks. Jörg Böhme, like Dortmund´s Frings and Evanilson, also suffered a torn cruciate ligament and will be out of action for at least six months.
Participants:
Was suffering quite a bit in Schalke, but in the end had reason to celebrate: Matthias Sammer.
Both teams had to cope with the a number of injuries. Matthias Sammer had to do without four regulars. Evanilson, Frings (both cruciate ligament), Christoph and Malte Metzelder (both not fit yet) and Sebastian Kehl (suspended) were all not available. But new signing Flavio Conceicao, who has joined Dortmund only four days ago, was in the squad. Schalke coach Jupp Heynkes had to do without van Hoogdalem (build-up training), Oude Kamphuis (rehab), Djordjevic (not fit yet), Mpenza (muscle) and Böhme (torn cruciate ligament). The weakened Agali (knee) took part in training again and was in the playing up front beside Ebbe Sand.
Tactics :
Borussia´s coach Matthias Sammer changed, due to his team´s special situation for the game against Schalke, his favoured 4-4-2 system and started with a 4-3-1-2 formation. Ewerthon, Demel and Rosicky played in midfield and Lars Ricken behind the two strikers Koller and Amoroso. New signing Flavio Conceicao was on the substitutes´ bench. Schalke coach Jupp Heynkes opted for a pure 4-4-2 formation. This had the following assignments: Wörns and Madouni took care of Agali and Sand, Reuter played against Kobiashvili, Dede against Asamoah. Demel marked Altintop, Ricken Schalke´s Poulsen, Ewerthon van Kerckhoven and Rosicky Alcides. Amoroso played way up front against Hajto, and Koller against Waldoch.
Analysis:
Schalke’s best and two-time scorer: Hamit Altintop.
Few chances, many minor fouls - this is how the first half between the blue and whites and the yellow and blacks can be summed up at the AufSchalke Arena. The home side were the more aggressive team, but couldn´t really threaten the Dortmund goal in the opening stages of the game. The BVB defence started solid and stopped Altintop and Asamoah trying to set up opportunities for Sand and Agali. Dortmund´s striker Jan Koller helped out defensively on a number of occasions. Schalke had their first chance after seven minutes when Altintop first tested Roman Weidenfeller with a long range shot, Agali took on the rebound, but only hit the crossbar.
After 25 minutes Dede appeared to have fouled Asamoah in the penalty box, but the referee decided against a penalty. Six minutes later Altintop was denied by Weidenfeller, after 35 minutes the Dortmund goalkeeper parried an Agali header from a free-kick. In the 39th minute Schalke finally took the lead. After Wörns had stopped Agali, Altintop picked up the ball and unleashed an unstoppable shot from outside the box. Borussia, who only had two scoring opportunities in the first 45 minutes from Ewerthon (5´) and Amoroso (37´), were hemmed into their own half now, but weathered the barrage until the break.
Scored the equaliser: Marcio Amoroso.
BVB improved at the beginning of the second half with Ewerthon missing a chance to tie the game after 53 minutes from a Rosicky cross. But five minutes later Schalke doubled their lead: Schalke´s best Altintop scored his second wonder-goal of the afternoon with another long-ange shot. Sammer reacted and brought on Conceicao for Demel. And what a debut for the former Real Madrid player! Only six minutes after coming in the new BVB star pulled one back for the visitors with an unstoppable free-kick. This is what true ball artists are made of. Borussia continued to press and tried all possible to level the game. Amoroso, who looked sharp throughout the game with technical finesses, had a chance after 78 minutes, but missed just as Jan Koller and the good Tomas Rosicky did a few minutes later. Jan Koller wasted an absolute sitter six minutes from time with a header from an Amoroso cross. Three minutes later Conceicao almost scored his second goal from a free-kick, but this time he was denied by Schalke´s goalkeeper Frank Rost. But Dortmund still managed to tie the game in injury time when Marcio Amoroso controlled a ricochet and found the net from short range. So, Borussia´s super stars scored and secured BVB a draw in the Bundesliga opener at the AufSchalke Arena.

In their first home game of the season Borussia Dortmund take on VfL Wolfsburg next Saturday. The Wednesday after they have the tough away match at FC Bruges (1830 CET) in the first-leg Champions League qualifier.
