Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero is optimistic the Bianconeri can catch Inter Milan at the top of the Serie A standings.
The Zebre, who entertain Siena in Turin tomorrow, will be desperate to extend their current winning streak to five games as they look to reduce the six-point gap from their Milanese rivals.

"We know we have what it takes to catch up with Inter and have the weapons to fight right until the end,'' Bianconeri captain Del Piero told the Gazzetta dello Sport.

"One thing is sure; now is the time for us to put our foot on the accelerator and reduce the gap to the league leaders.

"The coach (Claudio Ranieri) has reminded us of the concepts we must always keep in mind. The first thing is that we must never give up.

"We must also maintain the air of a smaller club. We should respect our adversaries whilst paying attention to particular details. Every ball and tackle is important.''

The Bianconeri will be hoping for a routine afternoon tomorrow as they have never lost in Turin to Siena in Serie A, and have not lost the first game after the winter break since the 1979/1980 season.

Ranieri is still hampered by injuries with Jorge Andrade, Mauro Camoranesi, Vincenzo Iaquinta, Dario Knezevic, Hasan Salihamidzic, David Trezeguet and Jonathan Zebina all unavailable this weekend.

Meanwhile, Siena coach Marco Giampaolo is happy with the condition of his side ahead of this weekend's tough trip.

The relegation-battling Robur have the difficult task of avoiding a fourth consecutive defeat tomorrow and the Tuscans - currently five points clear of the drop zone, will not be overly confident having lost seven of their nine games on the road.

"The lads have worked well over the break. Now our legs are slightly heavy from the training but that is how things should be,'' Giampaolo told the official club website www.acsiena.it.

"In our preparations for this weekend's game we will concentrate on worrying about ourselves, as we have done until now.

"We will also take into account the characteristics of our opponents as the work we have been doing during the break has been mainly technical and physical.

"We decided not to look at tactics until closer to the game as I preferred to concentrate on getting the lads back into shape.''

Robur sporting director Manuel Gerolin has insisted they will not be travelling to Turin just to make up the numbers this weekend.

"We will look to play our game in Turin,'' he said.

"Siena always plays with an open mind, looking for a result, whether at home or away. We will continue with this attitude, even against Juventus.''

A blow for the Robur will be the absence of goalkeeper Gianluca Curci as the Italy international is suspended. Emanuele Manitta will take over between the posts.

Giampaolo will also have to make do without injured trio Nicola Belmonte, Luca Rossettini and Simone Vergassola.

Key defender Daniele Ficagna has almost regained full fitness having spent a lengthy spell on the sidelines and could make the bench.

Mourinho: We missed key players Saturday 10 January, 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jose Mourinho admits his Inter aren't performing up to their standards and puts the blame on injuries and bans.

“It seems that when my team had balance and all the players with the right characteristics for their roles, they did very well,” he said of their eight consecutive Serie A victories, a run ended by tonight's 1-1 draw with Cagliari.

“It is natural that sometimes players will be suspended and we cannot play with the same line-up two weeks in a row.

“Many of you may say that shouldn't be a problem with a squad as large as Inter's, but once you find your balance, then even one missing can make a difference.”

Douglas Maicon sat out a ban and Dejan Stankovic was injured for the San Siro match and Mourinho repeatedly changes his tactics.

“It was not a positive first half and we were playing our best football when Cagliari scored. I took this risk because sometimes that is needed when you have to equalise, although it can make you lose 2-0 or 3-0, too.

“Cagliari did well and threatened on the counter-attack. It was a bit of a strange match.

“It is true we struggle against teams who play with a great deal of intensity, as we are not the fastest side in the world and it is easier for us when we can set the tempo.”

Hernan Crespo was the substitute who really made the difference and set up the equaliser for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“Crespo has always played regularly, coming off the bench and giving his contribution. I respect him, he is a great professional and will certainly get his chances.”

Considering a scraped and controversial 2-1 win over Siena before the Christmas break and this stalemate, Inter are not in the best form approaching February's Champions League tie.

“Considering the way we played today, then no we are not good enough to beat Manchester United, or indeed anyone else,” added Mourinho.

“My experience tells me these are moments a team goes through and the Champions League is all about luck of arriving at that appointment with all your players in good form.”

The former Chelsea boss also responded to Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez's complaints about pressure on referees at Old Trafford.

“I played at Old Trafford many times, including a few wins, and never saw anything strange. It is only normal that a referee will feel under pressure in an atmosphere like that with 80,000 people.”

Mario Balotelli was frozen out of the squad once again and Mourinho warned this situation would not be sorted out quickly.

“Mario is not indolent. He is a nice lad, but I don't like what he is bringing to the team right now and how he works during the week. It is not laziness, but nor is it the right attitude for a young player who wants to make his mark.

“This is an important club and he has to change his approach, because there are so many talents here and a Coach has to be honest and give the chances to those who deserve them.”

strange that he's making an excuse for this!

look at the lineup
Julio Cesar; Zanetti, Cordoba (Quaresma 46), Samuel (Crespo 67), Maxwell; Muntari, Cambiasso, Chivu; Figo (Mancini 67); Cruz, Ibrahimovic

we had so many injuries and did well while they just missed a couple and complaining

Marchioni is fuking useless. Ranieri what the fuk are you doing? Why put a left mid/left back as a RM?

Alex has been quiet second half. Amauri a handful as always. Melberg with a great tackle earlier on too.

Inter is a team that doesn't hold up under pressure. Just remember last year when Roma almost caught them in spite of the fact that they had had an 11 point advantage around the New Year! On the other side Juve has a winning mentality and a lot of champions. By June we will be first with the scudetto in our hands, and all of those sorry sons of bitches who call themselves Inter fans can kiss our champion ass like they did on the 5th of May 2002!!!!!!!

Against Lazio we must be at our very best, they are tricky side, and mistakes that we made against Siena shouldn't be repeated. We gave them too much space.

Shockwave
Jan 12 2009, 09:04 PM
Lazio will be a tough test for sure. I reckon this game with be vital to the title challenge. If we lose and Inter win, we might as well say bye to the scudetto.

Del Piero.....i'm a very pesimistic person lol

You gotta be an optimist 60 points are still available, just be patient, i feel we can do it. It will be some kind of a revenge for all unjustice which was brougth on us.

I hate saying this but Inter's squad is too big and strong to drop many points during the season. Also, we have the CL to think about. I just don't think we have enough players in our squad to fight on two fronts.

del_piero
Jan 13 2009, 02:08 PM
It is true that we have small squad, but i think that we have more team spirit than Inter.
Remember last year Inter against Roma, i think the more pressure we put on them the chance is they will break under pressure. Everybody thinks of them as a favourites and we just have to wait and see. But for me, maybe i am wrong Juve's first eleven isn't inferior to Inter's and all our injured players are back (Trezeguet, Buffon, Camoranesi, Tiago, Brazzo...) in action and they are fresh and well rested because they haven't played most of the season so this may be the key.

Looking at it that way then i agree but for all those players to get to their best, it's going to take time.

They all have knowledge, it's only metter of form.
