Soccer star Lucas Radebe is recuperating at home after collapsing at the gym. Danny Jordaan, CEO of the 2010 local organising committee, has expressed shock at the hospitalisation of former Bafana Bafana and Leeds United Captain Radebe.
"It's quite a shock and I just hope that he will have a quick recovery, especially as it comes after the scare of (sports presenter) Robert Marawa," Jordaan said.
Radebe, 39, who is also Fifa's 2010 ambassador, was rushed to Joburg's Morningside Clinic on Wednesday after he collapsed while exercising at a gym.
According to reports, Radebe was lifting weights when he suddenly passed out, shocking those around him at the Virgin Active gym in Grayston Drive, Sandton.
This was confirmed by Radebe's business manager Glyn Binkin, who said "Rhoo" was currently recuperating at his Sandton home.
A worried Blinkin told Independent Newspapers that Radebe could be suffering from stress and fatigue after his wife Feziwe passed away two months ago.
"Obviously, Lucas has been through a lot over the last six months, including his wife's death" said Blinkin, without elaborating any further.
He said "Rhoo", as Radebe was affectionately known in football circles, was now recuperating at his Sandton home and that his condition was stable.
"We had to take him to hospital as a precautionary measure, but he is now fine. He just needs to take it easy and relax," he said.
Radebe's wife, Feziwe, 34, died in October in 2008 after a long battle with cancer.
She was diagnosed with bowel cancer in May 2005 just days after Radebe's charity testimonial game at his former team in Elland Road.
Her death has been a huge strain on Radebe's life. At the time of her death, Binkin was quoted as saying that Radebe was devastated by her death as she had been a "loving mother and devoted wife who had been a great support to Lucas throughout his career".
The couple have two children.
According to reports, friends of the ex-Kaizer Chiefs captain visiting him last Saturday became worried when he suddenly blacked out and started complaining of chest pains.
A club member and a general worker and a general worker at the Virgin Active gym both said that Radebe's left side went numb and that he could not move either his hand or leg after he collapsed.
All the best to The Chief and hope and pray things are alright for you, this news puts football as second best. How we need a leader like Lucas at the moment.
