DENNIS BERGKAMP is on the brink of signing for Ajax after Arsenal offered him only £14,000 a week to stay.

The Gunners want legend Bergy to accept a third of the wages he has been picking up for the last two seasons.

But his agent Rob Jansen described Arsenal’s new one-year proposal as ‘embarrassing’.

And former Highbury stars are amazed the club cannot pay the out-of-contract Dutchman his worth.

Ex-defender Lee Dixon said: “I’d give him what he wants — the fans want him to stay another season.”

And fellow old boy Alan Smith admitted: “There seems a chronic shortage of money at Highbury at the moment.”

Hitman Thierry Henry earns around £50,000 a week and has another four years to run on his contract, while captain Patrick Vieira is in the middle of negotiating a £70,000-a-week deal.

Bergkamp, 34, is furious at the shabby offer after he stayed loyal to Arsenal instead of returning to Holland two years ago.

His first club Ajax begged the hotshot to re-sign for them but were told he was committed to Highbury and intended to finish his career there.

Bergkamp did not report back to London Colney for pre-season training yesterday and remained at his home in Amsterdam.

He had insisted he would hang up his boots if he could not reach an agreement with the Gunners.

But sources close to Ajax reckon Bergkamp has already spoken to long-time pal Marco van Basten about his situation.

Van Basten was recently appointed as right-hand man to Ajax coach Ronald Koeman and wants Bergy to play in Amsterdam for the next two years.

Ajax are concerned over their striker Jari Litmanen’s lack of fitness — and the Finn has also elected to carry on playing international football.

Ironically, Bergkamp called time on Holland because he hoped to extend his club career with Arsenal.

Bergkamp? Great player, I love him, but we don't need him!

He's not a striker, he's an attacking midfielder, there we already have v/d Vaart, Pienaar and Sneijder, young talent with a big future ahead of 'em and we already have experience on that position with Jari Litmanen, who can teach them a lot..

there's simply no room for Dennis..

But Jari never seems fit, plus with champions league, you need experience and Dennis has tons of it. Sure the lads played well this season, but they were not so impressive in the second group stage. I would like to see him return and finish off his career there since Arsenal do not want him.

Don't think he wants to.

Arsenal, what a disgrace!

Jari was indeed very much injured, but he also never got real time to get fit, he was injured from the beginning, but he always had to hurry to be able to play that important match, which afterwards you can say, came too early. He never was fully fit when he played.. this year he can begin the season fully fit, I think (and very much hope of course) that he won't be injured that much.. Jari won't play that much anyway, he isn't first choise, v/d Vaart and Pienaar are first choise, in case experience is needed Jari is coming in. Who says our young boys can't perform in the Champions League? They did great till now on, the greatest match being on highbury where Nigel de Jong (18) and Steven Pienaar (21) couldn't be handled by Vieira and Gilberto. Our young boys have no fear, they can perform against anyone. In the defense it might be usefull to get more experience, so we won't be under pressure that much, like we were in the last minutes in Milan.. But Bergkamp just isn't needed when you have great young talent like v/d Vaart, Pienaar and Sneijder and for the experience we already have Jari..

I wouldn't hate it if he came, although I think like TUWHC that Dennis isn't interested himself, but deffo isn't a neciserry player..
