REAL MADRID president Florentino Perez has stated his intention to buy a big name English player, with Michael Owen rumoured to be his preferred option.
In the last two summers, Perez has captured two of the world`s greatest talents, in the form of Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane, and it appears he plans to continue that policy.
"Our strategy at this club is to incorporate one of the world's top players every year," he told the News of the World.
"Geographical considerations are taken into account. With the signing of Zidane many French people and Arabs became Real Madrid fans. Now I would like to sign an English star.
"In England there are two great players - Owen and Beckham. However, Beckham plays in the same position as Luis Figo.
"Owen can be one of the world's great players and the best players must play for Real Madrid."
Despite revealing his admiration for Liverpool forward Owen, Perez will not make a decision on his target until assessing the talent on show at this summer`s World Cup finals.
