Atletico Madrid have ended their interest in Rangers Spanish midfielder Mikel Arteta.

The Scottish champions were prepared to sell the youngster just a year after signing him from Barcelona.

Atletico sporting director Tony Munoz confirmed the club failed to reach an agreement with Rangers for Arteta, who took time to settle to life in Scotland.

"Yes it's true we have changed our minds about Arteta," said Munoz.

"We have not reached an agreement with Rangers so we have decided to drop him from our list of possible signings.

"It would also have been a problem to cope with his annual salary even though Arteta was willing to take a pay cut to join us."

Partick Thistle have completed the signings of Faroe Islands goalkeeper Jakup Mikkelsen and French defender Jean-Yves Anis.

Mikkelsen was released by Norwegian club Molde for a new career in Scotland while free agent Anis is a former Chelsea player.

The pair, who have already played for Thistle in friendly games, are expected to be paraded at Firhill on Thursday afternoon.

A club spokesman said: "The players have today agreed terms with the club and have signed professional contracts."

Mikkelsen has warned current Thistle keeper Kenny Arthur that he faces a fight for the number one jersey at Firhill next season.

He said: "It is an exciting challenge for me and I am very much looking forward to it.

"I have been made to feel very welcome by the other players and the supporters so I cannot wait to get into action.

"I know that I will have a challenge to keep Kenny Arthur out of the side but I am there at the moment and I intend to stay there."

CELTIC youngster John-Paul McGovern is set to join Livingston after agreeing a three-year deal at Almondvale.
Despite a host of sides monitoring the youngster's progress, Livi have won the battle for his signature.

Lions' chairman Dominic Keane revealed McGovern could have a big future in the game, if he applies himself and works hard.

"He is a young Scot with a real chance in the game," said Keane. "He has been well groomed at Celtic, but it is so difficult to break through there.

"We are delighted to have the opportunity to give him the chance to progress to the next level although he is well aware that he will have to work hard here."

While chances at Celtic Park were limited, McGovern did gain experience last term after featuring in 18 games on loan for Sheffield United.

Trinidad and Tobago international Brent Sancho insists Dundee were his first choice, despite interest from clubs in England and mainland Europe.
Sancho was paraded as a Dundee player on Wednesday afternoon after the SPL club were finally successful in obtaining a work permit for the player.

The 26-year-old said that he was sold on the club as soon as he met manager Jim Duffy and the rest of the squad.

Sancho first caught Duffy's eye during Dundee's winter-break trip to the Caribbean in January.

"There was speculation that clubs in Europe and in England too wanted to have a look at me, but Dundee were always my first choice," he said.

"From the minute I met up with the manager and the rest of the guys I liked them and knew this was the place for me.

"Moving to Europe has always been my dream and I think the standard in Scotland is quite high, so hopefully I can learn more about the game and improve myself."

Sancho has signed a two-year deal at Dens Park.

He has experienced European football before, having spent a season with Finnish side Mypa 47, before returning to the United States to play for Portland Timbers.

DUNDEE will complete the capture of Mark Fotheringham from Celtic once he passes a medical this week.
The 19-year-old has seen his opportunities at Parkhead limited since breaking onto the scene three years ago.

Livingston have opened talks with Celtic about the possibility of bringing former favourite David Fernandez back to the club on a one-year loan deal.
Fernandez left Livingston for Celtic Park in a £1m deal in June 2002, but has seldom featured in Martin O'Neill's plans and scored just one goal last season.

"We'll have further discussions with Celtic Park over the next few days in an attempt to agree a deal before the transfer window closes at midnight on Sunday, but we're hopefull that a deal can be concluded before then," Livingston chairman Dominic Keane told the club's website.

"However, even if those negotiations are successfully concluded before then, David will definitely not feature for Livingston during this Saturday's visit to Parkhead."

Meanwhile, Canadian international striker Davide Xausa has left Livingston to join Falkirk.

Xausa, who still had one year left on his contract at the City Stadium, had fallen down the pecking order with the West Lothian side, following the arrivals of Derek Lilley and Guy Impoua over the summer.

CELTIC have launched a last-ditch bid to wrestle Brazilian midfielder Emerson from the grasp of Wolves.
The Premiership new boys have agreed a deal to sign the Atletico Madrid ace but the move is on hold while Emerson resolves a wrangle with the Spanish side.

Wolves had hoped to tie up the loose ends of their swoop on Thursday after Emerson passed a medical and concurred on personal terms to move to Molineux.

But Dave Jones's plans to have the 31-year-old available for Saturday's clash with Portsmouth could be thwarted by Celtic's late bid.

The Scottish giants have offered Atletico the same fee as Wolves - in the region of £1 million - and Emerson the same personal terms.

Emerson now faces a choice between Wolves and Celtic with the Black Country outfit waiting on the former Middlesbrough midfielder's decision with baited breath.

"Last night (Wednesday), we were informed by agents that Celtic had come in with an 11th hour bid," Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey told the club's website.

"Apparently Celtic's bid matches the terms of our bid exactly.

"Emerson is to meet officials of Atletico Madrid this morning to sign a termination agreement on his existing contract.

"I guess he will then make a decision as to where he will play his football this season - at Molineux or Parkhead.

"All we can do now is wait for his decision."

*Hmmm, Wolves or Celtic, i know where i'd rather play. I hope we do get him, he's a good player.

Gers close in on Emerson
--------------------------------

Emerson has experience of British football with Middlesbrough
Rangers are on the verge of signing Brazilian midfielder Emerson on a pay-as-you-play deal, BBC Scotland understands.

Glasgow rivals Celtic had made enquiries about the former Middlesbrough man but were scared off by his wage demands and Wolves will be disappointed having agreed terms with the player earlier this week.

Having sold skipper Barry Ferguson to Blackburn Rovers, Rangers manager Alex McLeish is anxious to fill the gap in the middle of the park and the Ibrox club have offered Emerson a two-year deal based on appearances.

"We do have a player at Murray Park having talks, a player of some calibre and that is the Brazilian midfielder Emerson," said Rangers chairman John McClelland.

"Emerson is a very, very experienced and talented player that we did watch and have had an interest in over a long period of time.

"We have a multi-national squad it is hard to see a team anywhere else made up of more multi-nationals so we are experienced with dealing with multi-nationals."

Wolves thought the player was on his way to Molineaux, after Emerson agreed terms and underwent a medical with the Premiership newcomers.

The Midlands club said on Wednesday that they were close to tying up a deal for Emerson, who spent last season at Atletico Madrid, following a £4m move from Deportivo La Coruna.

But the switch was held up by a dispute between the player and the Spanish club and that gave the agents of the 31-year-old Brazilian time to alert other clubs.

A Celtic spokesman said on Thursday: "Martin O'Neill did make enquiries for Emerson, however, in the course of discussions it became clear that a Dutch auction was already taking place and that the wage demands of the player were well beyond the manager's valuation."

When told of Celtic's interest, Wolves boss David Jones said he knew nothing about it and told Glasgow's Evening Times: "I believe he is signing for us. I will wring his neck if he isn't."

He added: " "There was a snag at his end which needed to be sorted out but I was under the impression we are just tying the loose ends up.

"If we lose out on him that will be disappointing because we have put a lot of hard work into it."

But more importantly:-

"Millwall have signed Australia international defender Kevin Muscat on a free transfer from Rangers.
Muscat, capped 43 times by the Socceroos, will join his fourth British club after starting his career with South Melbourne.

The abrasive Australian joined Crystal Palace in 1996 before moving onto Wolves, and then joined Rangers in July last year.

But after 25 appearances for the Scottish champions he has returned south of the border on a three-year deal."

The Dundee director, Giovanni di Stefano, has revealed that Paul Gascoigne was offered a player-coaching role at Dens Park before the transfer deadline.

Gascoigne was approached by the Tayside club after they failed in bids to sign Motherwell's James McFadden, Georgi Kinkladze, Deportivo La Coruna's Djalminha and an unnamed Atletico Madrid player who failed to turn up at Edinburgh airport where Dundee manager Jim Duffy was waiting.

They were also unsuccessful in bringing Gascoigne to the club, with the midfielder opting to stay with his current club, Al Jazira in the Middle East.

Di Stefano said: "Mr Duffy made a more-than-generous offer to Mr Paul Gascoigne to join Dens as a player/assistant coach.

Dundee chase Ravanelli

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/39325000/jpg/_39325112_burleyravanelli203.jpg

Dundee are chasing the signatures of former Derby County pair Craig Burley and Fabrizio Ravanelli.

Dundee were holding talks on Thursday afternoon with Burley's agent about the possibility of the former Scotland international joining the Scottish Premier League club.

And BBC Sport can also confirm that Dundee are vying with Coventry City for the signature of former Italy international Ravanelli.

The 34-year-old former Derby, Juventus and Middlesbrough striker has been out of action for much of last season with injury.

New Dundee director Giovanni di Stefano, presently in Italy, has promised part of his personal fortune to strengthening Duffy's squad, although talk of bringing in the likes of Georgi Kinkladze and Paul Gascoigne has so far failed to produce concrete signings.

Di Stefano will hope that his Italian connections will help persuade Ravanelli to head for Dundee instead of Coventry, who expect an answer from the striker in the next couple of days.

Midfielder Burley also has firm offers from a couple of clubs in the English First Division and tentative interest from a Premiership outfit.

Agent Gordon Smith told BBC Sport: "Jim Duffy has expressed an interest and we said we would talk after the Scotland game on Wednesday.

"Craig wants to play at the highest level possible and, if he is not going to Dundee, he has firm offers from other teams.

"So we could make a decision by the end of the week."

The 31-year-old Burley, like Ravanelli released by cost-cutting Derby, had been involved in talks with Dundee United during the summer, but Duffy's city rivals have now dropped their interest.

Duffy told his club's website: "This kind of speculation about players in the media is inevitable, but I want the fans to know that we're not responsible for it.

"We're not going to fuel it and we're not going to let it affect our preparations for the Celtic game.

"I've made it clear before that I won't make any comment on this kind of speculation as I believe it to be unfair to our supporters, to the players and the club."

Dundee plan to announce the signing of Italian striker Fabrizio Ravanelli on Monday.

The veteran frontman held talks with Dundee director Giovanni di Stefano on Wednesday.

After "extremely positive" discussions, Di Stefano has instructed the club to organise a news conference for 22 September to announce Ravanelli's arrival.

A Dundee spokesman said: "We will carry out his instructions within the course of the next 24 to 48 hours."

The former Juventus player is expected to sign a two-year deal with the Dens Park club.
