A friend of mine and I were once picking our fantasy premiership team and for some reason we tried to pick a team of players that sounded like they were abbreviations.
We never managed to get a whole team but I'll try to remember the ones we did get.

Feel free to add your own - past and present players allowed:

----------------------------????????------------------------

????????------------????????---------????????----------????????

????????------------????????------S.E.N.(Essien)---------Q.L.(Kewell)

---------B.T. (Beattie)-----------O.N.(Owen)

Damn, I can't remember any more, I'll have to go and email him now.

Bonsoir Bitches. I think I like this thread? Not sure but I think I do.
Anyway, this guy is the Pièce de résistance. His first and last name fit the criteria. Too bad he's a sh!te player. Radhi Jaidi (aka R.D J.D). He's at Birmingham at the moment. What about Man Utd's kid, P.Q (Pique). These three might be stretching the friendship, but R.B.L.O.R (Arbeloa), O.M.B (Olembe) and E.R.O (Elano with a japaneese accent?) Merci.

Hmm, don't think I'll accept that one. Although I'm not sure exactly how Kiraly is meant to be pronounced?

Wow, you have been busy thinking about this. :laugh
MRA has the rights sound so he's in. Good one.
Can't beleive ther'e not a KC anywhere, that would have been a good one.
DKNA - nah, the K needs to be more of a 'cah'
J.G.L.K. Hmm, not quite close enough.

Bonsoir Bitch.
Radhi Jaidi - good shout :clap He's straight in to the first 11.
PK too, I think you meant K and not Q, yeah?

R.B.L.O.R - I think its the BL bit that makes this one not work. bel-oah, not bee-ell
OMB is very close but not quite right.

Okay, so far we have:

----------------------------????????---------------------------------

--------P.K.(Pique)---------J.D.(Jaidi)-----------R.L.E.O.(Aurelio)---

--------------M.R.A.(Emre)---------------S.E.N.(Essien)--------------

T.L.(Teale)-----------------K.L.(Cahill)---------------Q.L.(Kewell)---

--------------B.T. (Beattie)-----------O.N.(Owen)--------------------

Nov 18 2007, 09:35 PM
Hahaha! DRB... quality...how did we miss that one...

If we're to continue looking to strengthen the squad...haha...others that ideally should be replaced are:

KCS...kinda obviously
JD... it's Jah-ee-dee really
RLEO... it's quality but fact is, it's AUrelio not AR...so if we can replace it, we should
TL... again it's not really pronounced Tee-ell...it's teele more or less...close tho
KL...as above
annnd QL... it's Kyool really, or Q-wl... so tho it's spelled like it'd be pronounced QL, it's not

So DRB can replace the worst of those...not KCS obv as he has to stay till we can find another keeper...but out of those the worst is JD really...so yea

Mike777
Nov 19 2007, 01:21 AM
^ About QL, tbh I think a lot of people pronounce it quite close to that ... same with RLEO, even tho it's spelled 'AU' most people pronounce it pretty much as a straight 'R' I think, or like a-REL-e-oh, which is close enough methinks.

With all of them you have to run them together smoothly like you're pronouncing a proper word instead of stressing each individual letter -- even in simple ones like DRB, if you stress each letter it sounds a tad off, but if you just stress the R it's spot on. (With BK or PK it doesn't matter tho, they're pretty much perfect).

JD - Some people pronounce J more like Ji than Jay, so it works if you do that.
RLEO - is perfect I think. He's probably my favourite.
TL and KL and QL are not perfect but I think they are better than DRB (Dee-ahr-bee has a 'r' sound there that shouldn't be.)

Bonsoir Bitches. Can I be blunt? Your options upfront are quite poor. You need a bit of class. I know this guy, he might have his best days behind him, but he seems pretty fit 'selling his arse' to mastercard. So what about considering the 3rd best player ever, P.L.A(say it quick now)......Pele.

It's not a French name FWIW, but with him being a Frenchman by nationality and having spelled it the French way, it should be pronounced as such.

In which case it sounds like neither of the options you or ada gave.
