Dean Ashton. He is strong, good in the air and can finish. Shearer's heir imo.
Discuss. :clap
Hmm, he's had a long long spell out but I know West Ham fans absoloutly love the guy and he nearly kept Norwich up when they signed him. He needs at least a season of Premiership football before he gets touted as anything of the sort.
I think Ashley Young, Theo Walcott, Micah Richards and Gabriel Abonlahore are all very exciting talents. Richards has already established himself but I feel the other three will be future England internationals as well.

Ada is essentially right and has some good picks in there as well...
Ashton is good in so much as he has the attributes of Crouch/Heskey, though in a less extreme fashion, and is more well-rounded in other aspects, which makes him a more complete and flexible player than those two, and younger...yeah he could be big, he has all the attributes...but then you do get people with all the attributes that don't make it for reason x or y...injury is often one of them and he's had a nasty one...let's hope tho

He still has to prove himself over a premiership season yet

Tbh I haven't seen a whole lot of Ashton, but he seems to have a pretty good reputation and was ahead of the likes of Andy Johnson and Peter Crouch in the England pecking order before his injury, if I'm not mistaken. He looks a strong lad, if he has the skills to go with the physical presence then he could be a real contender.
Walcott I'm not sold on ... I've seen a little of him, and I'm not really sure about him. Obviously he has great pace, but I'm not sure if he has that striker's instinct ... he might be a better winger, who knows ...

I absoloutley LOVE Ashton (see the other thread).
He can do a bit of everything, if he can get fit and playing regulary he will get in the England side IMO. Good in the air, holds the ball up well, can finish with both feet, clever runner, not that slow.

good player, but the next shearer? lets see him do it over a string of seasons first

Ashton should be in ahead of Defoe, Bent, AJ and maybe even Crouch. He has it all. The heading, goal poacher, a bit of pace, sets up others too and holds up the ball well. TBH he is one of the few out and out strikers around. If he grabs a couple of goals from now until October then he may well be in England's squad. Doubt he is the next Shearer though Monkey.

I saw him as a youngster at crewe and he seemed to have a fair amount of pace in him. But then again that was when Forest and Crewe was in the Championship and it's obviously a different level when compared to the Premiership.

you can't compare Ashton to shearer....you just can't
He is a solid player and will do really well at West Ham. But a world beater? One of the worlds best? Not even close IMO

Isnt he more of a Rooney like player with holding up the ball. We need our strikers to complement eachother. Lets see how Rooney and Owen do now when both fit against hopefully Estonia.
Walcott maybe? I say this because Wenger is pure genius in teaching young guns and maturing them into exceptional players.

the talent has to be there in the first place though in order to become a world beater, and if im honest i think wenger got that one wrong

Walcott has the talent, he's shown it in glimpses for us, but he's not suited to the wing and just needs more consistency. Through the middle as he showed in the CC final, he's much more effective

Walcott hasn't really shown any ability in the Prem, he showed it in the Championship, as did Ashton, but he has shown his ability in the Prem aswell.

He should be Owen's replacement in the sense that Heskey is Rooney's replacement.
Owen/Rooney = 1st choice
then either:
Owen/Heskey or Ashton/Rooney
AJ, Defoe and Bent just haven't done anything to deserve their places in the England team. Although neither has Ashton, I just reckon that he is the better prospect.

Dean Ashton is a poor man's Viduka at the moment and will never be anywhere near the quality of Shearer pre 97.
We've got a lad on our books who we've got high hopes for called Ryan Donaldson but with all kids you never know if he'll make the step up, he's highly rated by the FA but he's only 15 at the moment so he'll have a good few years yet before he's likely to get his chance.

Ashton I would definately rather to Bent as he fits the bill for England alot better and would be a greater all round threat and more useful player. Although, he needs to sort out his hair.
