ONYEWU: NO SIGNIFICANT OFFERS

Michael Adubato for Yanks Abroad Wednesday, July 18, 2007

Following a brief vacation after the title-retaining Gold Cup victory over Mexico, USMNT defender Oguchi Onyewu has returned to Belgium and his team Standard Liege.

"I just got back [to Belgium] three days ago," the big central defender told YA. "I went to Dubai to relax before returning to the team."

"I've been training with the team since coming back. Right now we're in a training camp and we cannot even go home."

"The team has a new training facility and this is where I've been."

Les Rouches took part in a presesaon friendly on Wednesday German club Alemannia Aachen in which the American played the first 57 minutes. The Germans scored a minute after the American's departure before the Belgians leveled it a one apiece three minutes before the final whistle.

Of course, the Onyewu rumors are ripe again after his release from Newcastle United at the end of the English Premiership season, but the Washington, D.C. native is just sticking to what he does best.

"Everybody has been telling me about that," a surprised Onyewu replied to a question about a reported bid from Championship club Sheffield United. "Liege hasn't gotten any significant offers from anyone."

"I've just been training with the team and seeing what's going happen from there," Onyewu claimed. "Right now just focusing on my form and staying in good shape."

Standard Liege travel to Le Mans in France for their next preseason game next Wednesday.

Hmm decent defender never cut it in the EPL, highlighted when Darren Bent barged him off the ball, better off in mainland Europe.

Another one you guys ruined right? :D

A serious injury, being caught in Nigeria by a fake car jacking or a dip in form.

Must be something in the water?

^ haha...nice one

He didn't do too much at Newcastle this past year, but it doesn't necessarily mean he's a poor defender or isn't cut out for the Premiership. Vidic was pretty poor and got bullied off the ball a few times in his first few months at United and many people were questioning the buy...only for him to be a monster this year. The Premiership is a very tough league to get adjusted to and most people struggle to adapt-especially in the beginning and even more so at a club in as much turmoil as Newcastle was last year.

Think he should do his best to find someone in England since that will help his game more than playing in Belgium would

I heard the Detroit Lions picked up the rights to Onweyu.
