I know the former was better, but which of the players we had this season would make it to the starting eleven we had back then?

Baia vs Helton
Ferreira vs Bosingwa
Carvalho vs Pepe
Jorge Costa vs Bruno Alves
Valente vs Fucile
Costinha vs Assuncao
Maniche vs Lucho
Deco vs Anderson
Alenichev/Carlos Alberto vs Quaresma
Derlei vs Lisandro
McCarthy vs Adriano

There isn't really a huge difference in most positions is there?

You were unlucky to face Chelsea this year, I think you would have gotten pretty deep into the CL.

I think the best team from the two seasons would have been..

---------------Baia-----------------
---------Carvalho--Pepe-----------
Boswingwa-------------------Valente
---------------Assuncao-----------
-------Maniche----------Deco-------
Quaresma----------------------Carlos Alberto
-----------------McCarthy----------

Assuncao is really underrated in my opinion. Hes was a beast against both Arsenal and Chelsea

Youd have dois putas on the wing though..Quaresma and Carlos Alberto.

Carlos Alberto was simply amazing, one of the best prospects I've ever seen...his attitude was worse then Danis shamefully.

Good stuff, great thread.

I would say...

Baia > Helton
Ferreira < Bosingwa
Carvalho > Pepe
Jorge Costa > Bruno Alves
Valente > Fucile
Costinha < Assuncao
Maniche = Lucho
Deco > Anderson
Alenichev/Carlos Alberto < Quaresma
Derlei > Lisandro
McCarthy > Adriano

or
-----------------Baia--------------
-Bosingwa-Carvalho-Pepe--Valente-
---------Assuncao-Maniche--------
-Quaresma-----Deco-----Lisandro--
---------------McCarthy-----------

for me its a very hard decision, especially Maniche-Lucho.

Paulo Ferreira looked a world beater at us, but IMO Bosingwa would be most managers choices due to his pace.

Helton vs Baia is a tough one, but I think Baia in the 2004 season was the best keeper in europe.

Carvalho vs Pepe, the difference is minimal, but Carvalho is a slightly superior defender IMO (We must remember that Pepe is only 23 though).

J.Costa vs B.Alves...we must go with the Capitao Eternal.

Valente vs Fucile...I choose Valente because of the great left footed cross.

Costinha vs Assuncao...the difference isn't huge, but Costinha was a better tackler, and better aerially.

Maniche vs Lucho, both fine players for Porto, and Lucho is more important to the 2007 team than Maniche was for the 2004 team probably, but I chose Maniche because he had a much better long passing range, was box to box, more aggressive...the only thing Lucho does better is score penalties.

Deco vs Anderson...thats a no brainer, Deco was 10 times the player that Anderson is now. Of course Anderson is young, but we are comparing 2004 vs 2007, and not what anderson might become, so Deco is the clear choise.

Alenichev/C.Alberto vs Quaresma...the only winger in recent times who has done anywhere near as much for Porto is Drulovic in the 90's. Quaresma is the clear choice.

Derlei vs Licha, not much difference, but for me Licha is more reliable. If Lisandro started every match he would be a 12-15 goal a player season IMO. But through injuries and managerial choices he has never gotten to prove it. Under Adriaanse Lisandro had 8/9 goals scored by christmas, and was then dropped.... Derlei was a fine player for us, but like I said the difference is minimal

Benni vs Adriano...Adriano is a more clinical finisher, and against smaller teams Adriano is a great player to have. But against decent defences he is nowhere to be seen, so in Europe Benni was clearly more useful, and so my selection
