The club have made a £17.38million profit from transfer deals since John Wardle took over from David Bernstein as chairman in March 2003.

That bit there shows exactly the huge lack of ambition at City

What were we supposed to do though? Its pretty obvious now that we needed that money to keep the club running and we still need a few profitable players out of the academy along with the new TV deals to be in a situation where we can spend again. Its the legacy of Keegan.

Maybe so but the sheer size of the debt compared to transfer/wages outlay just doesn't add up.
The move to Eastlands must have cost the club far more than was admitted at the time.
Keegans legacy was a huge debt but at times sublime football, Pearces legacy will be boring uninspiring football followed by a visit to the championship

For me the numbers still don't make much sense. The piece I read recently suggested we were running at around a 10mil pa deficit. Even allowing for our generous payscale, I fail to see how we can be doing so much worse than other clubs. Were we ever likely to be a 'going concern'? Fortunately even more money is coming into the game, but from what I can decern it would appear our boards game plan and thoughts are to put some lipstick on this pig and get someone to buy it off them - LOL. So for the boards 'lack of ambition' I think 'biding time' is equally accurate. Unfortunately getting this divorce and not losing all the assets to the wife .... I mean club, means finding the right buyer. In the meantime, shore up the balance sheet, keep it all on a tight budget, except when the fans look like they're seeing through the facade, say a few positive things and pray every night that there's a rich person somewhere who wants to waste a few million on a fad (for them) for a few years.

yup...his major success has been bringing Richards through and clearing out a load of dead beats like Reyna, McManaman, Fowler etc. Yet week in week out we seem to play shocking football, brief glimpses of being a solid team, but most of the time looking like a club that is willing to survive on not getting beat rather than winning games.

That's a bit harsh really. Looking at our starting eleven, besides Dunne, Distin and Barton; it's practically a whole new team than the start of last season. Taking this into account I'm willing to be far more forgiving to both Pearce and the board - with the amount of players coming in, in key positions, and key players leaving last year, this season was going to be anything but a rebuilding year. Anything above avoiding relegation is a bonus.

Dabo and Trabelsi aside, who has he brought in that has had any impact?

Samaras may or may not come good one day, Hamann has yet to show anything, Corradi isn't scoring, Dickov has done nothing, Vassell blows hot and cold, and Beasley is only just coming round 5 months into the season.

Whilst uninspiring signings during the transfer window, Ball and Abdoun may be surpise packages...

City's best players were around before Pearce took over as you have said; Dunne, Distin and Barton.

As for tactics, at times they have been baffling and for the main part inexcusably ill contrived. Doing the basics seems to be something that has been lost, as petty as it sounds, look at the organisation of Reading with far less quility playing staff.

I totally agree with that last bit though, just there doesn't seem to be all that much rebuilding. As i said, he has succeded in getting plenty of players off the wage bill, but we haven't replaced anyone sufficently.

As pessimistic as it sounds, this year is about holding out for next years money, but we have got to rebuild over the summer as the club is showing a distinct lack of ambition.

This is where our strategy should come to the fore. We pay more than most clubs and, I assume, have a salary scale accordingly. We should be able to attract most out of contract players we want - the only problem being that agents don't see a big fee and therefore don't advise their players of the best financial move possible for the player because they don't see as much benefit. Well - we need to get it known by players of other clubs - I don't care how, so they ask their agents to see if City are interested. Our method is perfect for the current transfer system - we just need to work it more and then we should have our choice of anyone thinking of joining 70% of the other premiership clubs (outsdie of the big 4 and London clubs) on a free. Course it may piss a few people off, but our pay scale is what it is, and we should get what we can pay for ... we have a big edge but we're too gentile to use it or some other feeble excuse .....

Star's future still in the balance Tue, Feb 06 2007 14:53
Steve Sidwell will hold further talks with Reading before deciding if he will extend his spell at the club beyond the end of the season
The former Arsenal youngster turned down a new contract offer in the summer amid interest from Manchester City and he is still keeping his options open.
Sidwell said: "It is a big decision for me and this is an important stage of my career, so I am in no rush.

"I want to chat with the club again and see where their ambitions are, where they want to take Reading," he also told the Daily Star.

Sidwell has enjoyed a good season with Reading defying the odds to climb up to sixth place in the Premiership table with just 12 games left to play this term.

Reports in Germany claim Manchester City and the Londoners are hot on the heels of the 24-year-old defender, who has been in great form for Wolfsburg this season.

Scouts from both clubs have watched him in action this season, yet it is believed City boss Pearce is most eager to add him to his squad during the summer transfer window.

However, Madlung is contracted to the German side until the summer of 2009, and the former Under-21 international will not come cheap for the Eastlands boss.
