Liverpool will be without midfielder Luis Garcia for the remainder of the season after he picked up a serious knee injury on Tuesday.

The Spaniard was stretchered off with 15 minutes remaining of Liverpool's Carling Cup quarter-final tie against Arsenal.

Garcia was in obvious pain as he was carried from the Anfield pitch and scans have now revealed the severity of the injury.

The 28-year-old ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will be out for a considerable amount of time.

"Unfortunately we expect to be without Luis for six months," a club spokesman told Liverpool's official website.

Meanwhile, Mark Gonzalez, who Garcia replaced, will be sidelined for three weeks after injuring his shin in the same game.

An X-ray on Tuesday evening allayed fears that the Chilean had broken his leg, but a scan has revealed severe bruising to the bone and soft tissue.

GARCIA RULED OUT FOR REST OF SEASON
Paul Eaton 10 January 2007 http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/images4/090107_garcia_120_01.jpg Liverpool have been dealt a serious injury blow with the news that Luis Garcia (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/garcia/) won't play again this season. The Spaniard was stretchered off during last night's Carling Cup clash with Arsenal and a scan has today confirmed he has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Liverpool Head of Press Ian Cotton said: "Unfortunately we expect to be without Luis for six months."

Chilean midfielder Mark Gonzalez (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/gonzalez2/), meanwhile, faces up to three weeks on the sidelines with the shin injury he sustained against the Gunners.

An x-ray after last night's game immediately confirmed there was no fracture, but a scan today has revealed severe soft tissue bruising and bruising to the bone of his right shin.

I hate him with a Passion, but having sufferaged a ligament knee injury earlier in the season i no how damn painful it is, i wouldn't wish it on any1 and i hope he has a speedy recovery, although a good enough recovery never to have such an injury again

Possibly the worst match ever witnessed at Anfield for quite a while, through Liverpool eyes.

Very bad news. And i think he is a player back for the champions league clashes. We will see if we need him. But the next games im very interest in how we play! Finnan as right midfielder and Carragher as right back und on the left side Aurelio and Riise!

bad news for him, good news for the team imo

Even though hes been as ineffective as $hit at times...its never good news for the team to lose such a talented player.

I dont think hes a starter for us, but id have him on the bench every game.....gutted for him.
Best of luck with the recovery Luis.

I blame whoever made the thread asking what we thought of him  You jinxed him!!!!!!!!

the biggest part said that he was excellent going off the bench, so he remains a very good player and it's a big loss....

now a new player has to arrive no? gonzalez out three weeks it's the moment for bringing a good winger....

He could always be a match winner on his day and come up with something special, against Barca, he would've done well imo.

Hope he gets better.

He has been sh!t, but he is the kind of player who would score a wonder goal vs barca, and TBH Gerrard apart I dont see any other player capable of scoring a goal like Garcia could.

Yeah thats right but he can be often the match loser. But i think it's very bad for the club. He can play against bigger clubs we all know.

We will see if we need him or we can life without him the rest of the season!
