HOLT PLAYS THROUGH THE PAIN BARRIER
12:00 - 10 October 2006
Gary Holt today insisted he wouldn't allow his persistent knee injury to be an excuse for any drop in standards.
The Nottingham Forest midfielder has been carrying a knee cartilage problem for the past month.
He admits it is getting increasingly difficult to play through the pain barrier - but is adamant he won't blame the injury on any dips in his performances.
"I'm not like that," said Holt. "I'm the first to admit when I have a bad game so I will not use it as an excuse - maybe to get the odd day off training, but not when it comes to games.
"If it gets to the point that it is detrimental to the team then we will have to do something."
Holt has been holding off having an operation on the knee because of the busy September schedule - but he concedes he is running out of time before having to go under the surgeon's knife.
He said: "It's getting a grind to get through each week at the moment.
"I think if Sammy (Clingan) and Junior (Agogo) weren't away on international duty I might have had it done.
"I'm not going to do any more damage to it. It is there, the damage has been done, and I'm playing through it. When you are playing the adrenaline takes over and a couple of painkillers and you don't feel it."
A cartilage operation should keep Holt on the sidelines for up to a month. But he is confident that Colin Calderwood has the strength in-depth to cover his absence. "We've got players who can do the job," he added.
I just hope this injury doesnt turn into something more serious. It has got to be affecting his game and should be dealt with immediatly.
