Mário Jardel is back among the goals on his return to Portugal

If Mário Jardel continues to score at his present rate, restaurateur Venâncio Toucedo could be out of pocket come the end of the season. Toucedo has promised Jardel a free meal in his seafood restaurant in Aveiro for every goal Jardel notches for his new club SC Beira-Mar - with two in three games since returning to Portugal in July, the 33-year-old is unlikely to go hungry.

Anticipation
There was a buzz of anticipation over the summer following the news that elder statesmen Rui Costa and Jardel would be returning to Portuguese football. Jardel is one of the most prolific strikers in the country's history having hit 183 goals in 174 Liga matches with FC Porto (1996-00) then Sporting Clube de Portugal (2001-03). But many doubted he would rescale such heights after arriving at Beira-Mar overweight following three years of trading teams in places as far afield as England, Italy, Argentina, Spain and Brazil.

Birthday present
Jardel, though, underwent a weight-loss programme and is back among the goals. He marked his return with one in the 2-2 opening-day draw with CD Das Aves then added another in Beira-Mar's 2-0 victory against CF Estrela da Amadora on Sunday, one day before his 33rd birthday. "I feel I'm alive again," Jardel told A Bola. "I cannot disappoint the people who have put their faith in me. I'm peaceful and happy now and I have a strong desire to score for Beira-Mar. I'm happy again in Portugal."

Super Mário
Beira-Mar coach Augusto Inácio believes there is much more to come from his star man. "I have to consider other things with Jardel, not just sporting ones," he said. "Mário has had three difficult years and some people were thinking he could no longer do the things he did before. This experience has been positive but he is still far from being 'Super Mário'. We have revived Mário but we still have to revive 'Super Mário'."

'Something different'
The next test is the big one, Jardel's return to the Dragão to play former club Porto on Friday. "It will be something different, emotional, when I tread that turf," Jardel said. "I play for Beira-Mar now and I want to score in every match, but if I scored at the Dragão I don't know if I would celebrate." Beira-Mar supporters certainly will.

Generous offer
They will be hoping it is 'Super Mário' that takes the pitch against Porto - then again, plain old Mário is getting enough goals to keep a certain Senhor Toucedo busy. A true fan, Toucedo insists he will be only too happy to pay his debt every weekend if Jardel carries on scoring. But if the Brazilian repeats the feats of his previous two spells in Portugal - when he top-scored in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2002 - Toucedo might have to reconsider his generous offer come the spring.

Should'nt we be asking you that? You defended him ever since he came to porto. :ninja Anyways Porto played amazingly well today.. ok well they did'nt exactly play a world class team but they did show that they can work well together and get the job done. I hope they perform like this or even better when they play against arsenal. I will be at the game making sure that happens. :P

jorginho 3 lol

he did play badly though

This wasnt the awesome performance by porto that people here are describing

1st half we were very average, and helton produced a fine safe to keep it at 0-0

2nd half, with lisandro and (more importantly) anderson, we looked a different team, and played very well

my ratings:

Helton-4
Bosingwa-3.5
pepe-3.5
b.alves-3
cech-2.5/3
assuncao-3
lucho-3
jorginho-2
postiga-4.5
quaresma-3.5
adriano-1.5

subs:
licha-3.5
anderson-3.5
tarik-3 (was greedy once or twice, but did well)

Postiga IMO was superb, he sent in some good crosses (including an awesome left footed cross in the 1st half), he scored two disallowed goals 91 was marginally offside, the other was clearly onside), made some awesome runs (one where he got behind the defence, again wrongly given as offside) and of course scored a great goal, in a moment of individual brilliance

Anderson was also a huge influence in the match. in the first half, jorginhos lack of vision and speed slowed down alot of attacks, but anderson came on and gave us a whole new dimension

Quaresmas 2nd half display was also very good
