Brian Clough's family have donated a special item for an auction to raise money for a statue of the Master Manager in Nottingham. They have given the statue fund committee a bust of Cloughie which was one of the first to be made.

The bust will be the star item of a Grand Internet Auction starting this week, which features a host of memorabilia donated by famous people. The auction on ebay is being launched this Monday morning (September 18th, 2006), with all proceeds going to the statue fund in Nottingham.

Among the other auction items are a football donated by Forest legend Stuart Pearce and signed by his squad at Manchester City; an original silver-plated tankard from the 1980 League Cup Final, donated by former Nottingham Forest secretary Ken Smales; a framed Old Big 'Ead green sweatshirt signed by Forest legends John McGovern, John Robertson and John O'Hare and Brian Clough's widow Barbara; a framed tribute to European champions Barcelona, signed by manager Frank Rijkaard; an Old Big 'Ead green sweatshirt signed by the current Forest squad including manager Colin Calderwood; a signed football designed by Nottingham fashion king Sir Paul Smith; and a rare Brian Clough banner displayed at the memorial service in Nottingham.

The special item to be auctioned will be the resin bust of Cloughie, which was owned by his family. It is a miniature version of the one in the reception of Nottingham Forest's City Ground. It was made by the Nottinghamshire sculptor Gordon Brown. The replica version comes in a special presentation box and has number 5 printed on the bottom to show it was one of the first few to be made.

Rich Fisher from the statue fund said he was looking forward to seeing how much the various items would raise. "We are extremely grateful that Brian Clough's family offered to donate the bust for the auction," he said. "The Clough family have given their support to the fund from the beginning and it means a great deal to all the volunteers involved. We have written to a number of well-known people and the list of items for the auction is tremendous. It will be a unique opportunity for people to buy sought-after memorabilia while helping a very special cause."

There will be eleven other items auctioned at the same time as the bust. All items will be on ebay for ten days. Other items include a shirt donated by Bolton boss Sam Allardyce and signed by Big Sam and his squad; a dart board signed by the former host of TV's Bullseye, Jim Bowen; a Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club shirt, signed by the squad; and a signed Blackburn Rovers shirt.

The banner, displayed at the memorial service in Nottingham, features a picture of the Great Man alongside the quote: "I want no epitaphs of profound history. I contributed, I hope they would say that, and I hope somebody liked me." Similar banners have fetched up to £1,000 at auction.

Links to the various items on ebay will be made available on the non profit making tribute website, www.brianclough.com (http://www.brianclough.com/), which features more details about the statue fund and how to donate on-line.

The statue fund was set-up in June last year by a group of fans who are determined to see a lasting tribute to Brian Clough in Nottingham city centre. As well having the backing of Brian Clough's family, the fund has the support of the city council, Nottingham Forest and the supporters club. The current total is £45,500. The target is £60,000.

People are still being encouraged to send donations. Cheques should be made payable to: 'Nottingham City Council - Brian Clough Statue Fund' and sent C/O Paul J. Ellis, PKF, Accountants & Business Advisers, Regent House, Clinton Avenue, Nottingham, NG5 1AZ.

It's about time Forest put the other £15k in, instead of just "supporting" the fund.
