Houllier’s ‘gems’ set to go
Max Munton - August 7th, 2006
Out of favour French youngsters Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle are set to leave Liverpool this week, three years after signing for the club.
Neither player has been able to break into the first team regularly since being signed by former Reds boss Gerard Houllier in 2003.
The club have been forced to loan both players out in the past, and now Rafael Benitez is looking to offload the 21-year-olds who are not part of his plans.
Le Tallec looks set to sign for French side Sochux. He impressed in the French league at St Etienne during a loan spell there last year.
And striker Sinama-Pongolle has attracted the interest of Spanish outfit Osasuna after a good loan spell at Blackburn Rovers towards the end of last season.
With Pongolle set to leave, Benitez will step up the pace on signing a new striker in time for the new season with only Peter Crouch, Craig Bellamy and Robbie Fowler his first team forwards.

The more players we clear from reserves that have no chance of getting a game, the more wages wee free up, thus able to pay high wages of a big star. (hopefully).

But then not having the cash for the transfer fee for the big star............

I think the wages is just as important these days.
We have been getting wee bit's of money for these players, it all add's up, and remember a lot of these players that have left have been replaced with younger guys from the academy who will be on much less wages.
If we qualify for champions league, that will also garuntee a sum of money, which could maybe be used.??
Rafa not really spent much either this pre season.

Know what ur saying mate, it helps balance the books, but it aint gonna get us those big players we need.

Aug 7 2006, 11:05 AM
Yea, but if the books are better balanced and wages are down overhall, that must free up more money to get the big players.??

I know ur right lad, im wrong, cos uit all counts, im just frustrated at the fact we dont seem to be able to make any headway in getting rid of players and getting a decent fee in. It seems to be loan, or they seem to wing their was back here, ala Diao.

The loan thing does irritate me, of course it's preferable to them rotting away in the reserves, but people like Kirkland with no future left in the club should ideally be looked the be sold, rather than letting another Premiership club get him for free, basically.

I think by the time the season starts, we will all look back at this & think S@~t we did sell a lot of players, and managed to get some money back.
That's traore going for 2mill now. Barragan 3/4 mill.
If only we could get rid of Diao!!
Traore at least did a job for us, only let us down now and again.
But Diao is a total waster!

I don't know, the things I do for you guys
MADRID: Defender Antonio Barragan has completed his move from Liverpool to Deportivo Coruna on a five-year contract, the Primera Liga club said on their Web site yesterday.
Depor said the deal was worth one million euros, and that Liverpool reserved the right to buy the player back after the second or third year for 700,000 euros.
The 19-year-old right back joined Liverpool from Sevilla in July 2005 after rejecting the chance to sign a professional contract with the Andalucians.
His only appearance for Liverpool came as a substitute in their Champions League third round qualifier against CSKA Sofia in Bulgaria last August. He was a part of the Spanish squad who have just won the European Under-19 championship in Poland. – Reuters

not sure I agree with you there Shanks, If he was a wantaway why would we put a buyback clause in the transfer, I think he was fed up not getting enough games..

I read somewhere he was homesick, maybe wanted to go home, then move away when he is more mature.

Regarding Houlliers Gems has anyone noticed a pattern to what Benitez is doing..
Riise (houllier signing)
Hamann (houllier signing - benitez sold)
Babbel (houllier signing - benitez sold)
Henchoz (houllier signing - benitez sold)
Smicer (houllier signing - benitez sold)
Murphy (houllier signing - benitez sold)
Finnan ( houllier signing)
I haven't included Cisse, to avoid upsetting Shanks.
All of the above were 1st team regulars with between 4 - 7 years at Anfield and out of 7 of Houlliers signings 5 have gone, there may be more but these seem to be the most prominent...also not sure if Danny Murphy was Houllier solo signing or with his double act with Roy Evans
well... thats bound to happen.
I could see him getting rid of Finnan within a couple of seasons but only because he is getting close to 30 now...
I dont see him getting rid of Risse anytime soon...

DOH!!!
Sochaux's deal to sign Liverpool's France Under-21 international Anthony Le Tallec has fallen through because of complications.
The 21-year-old Frenchman had been expected to move to the Ligue 1 outfit on loan this season with view to a permanent deal.
Coach Alain Perrin has been desperate to bolster his attacking line for the tough season ahead, but the Stade Bonal boss has now confirmed that he will look elsewhere for a solution.
"It is very complicated. I don't know why, but it is complicated," coach Alain Perrin told l'Est Republicain.
"We will bounce back and target another prospect.
"I have another option and we are going to travel."
some have suggested Le Tallec was demanding better wages...
i wouldnt be surprised but i hope he's just begged Rafa to let him stay and he wants to give it his all in the reserves :)
