Jürgen Röber has been confirmed as the new coach of VfL Wolfsburg after the board accepted Wolfgang Wolf's offer to resign at an extraordinary general meeting last night.

Stepped down
The German Bundesliga club said today that Wolf, 45, who was expected to leave at the end of the season, had stepped down prematurely following a run of indifferent results. Wolf said: "The continuous public discussions about my position meant it was not favourable to continue."

'Outstanding work'
After the club won promotion to the German top flight in 1997, Wolfsburg consolidated their position and became a force to be reckoned with. Lothar Sander, the club president, thanked Wolf "for his exemplary commitment and outstanding work in the past five years", calling it "the most successful time in the club's history".

Cottbus up first
Lander has called on Röber to "continue the good work" after offering the former Hertha BSC Berlin coach a contract until 30 June 2006. The 49-year-old will take training for the first time today ahead of Saturday's home match against struggling FC Energie Cottbus. Wolfsburg are eleventh in the 18-team Bundesliga with eleven matches remaining.

Will the new coach turn things around this season? I thought Effenburg might have went for the job :o
