View Full Version : Litmanen speaks out

For a man who played in the great young Ajax team that won the European Cup in 1995, it says much about Arsenal that the unassuming Finn eulogises about his opponents’ flamboyant style. “I can see their players are really enjoying playing,” Litmanen said. “It’s really nice to watch.
“This game will give the teams direction. Arsenal have been together for a couple of years at a high level. They haven’t achieved the same in Europe as in England. Now they are moving to a higher level in Europe. It’s a big challenge for us. We can learn a lot. We have a young and talented group who haven’t been together for so long. There is a positive atmosphere.”
Too bad Ajax puppies are not intimitated by Arsenal. It makes them only stronger.
Both his parents played football and Litmanen has been a Liverpool fan since childhood, but he shies from speculating on their present problems, or how the team compares with the one he recalls watching on television as a boy.
A deep-lying forward, Litmanen was the most productive strike partner for Michael Owen on a goals per game basis, with the England striker scoring eight goals in 20 matches alongside the Finn. Debates on Liverpool usually come down to playing style. Houllier has defended accusations that their system is rigid and sterile.
Is it true that Owen was most effective when Litmanen was on the pitch? No wonder, but I wonder if Houllier ever read the stats.

should be a good game tonight. blend of youth and experience can be a difficult task for Arsenal to go through. Litmannen vs Bergkamp (will he play?). 2 football geniuses with great vision and effective style.
1-1 again.

02/26/2003. Ronald Koeman has slammed former Ajax legend Dennis Bergkamp ahead of the Dutchman's return to Amsterdam for tonight's Champions League showdown with Arsenal.
The Ajax coach is unhappy with the strikers tackling when the teams first met at Highbury last week in a frustrating 1-1 draw for the Premiership side.
Tonight's match at the Amsterdam ArenA is key to both teams chances of reaching the quarter-finals, and Koeman has asked Bergkamp to control himself.
He said: "Twice I was not very happy with him. Two tackles were far from clean. One was on Tomas Galasek in the first half and the other led to a bit of a fight with Andy van der Meyde after the break.
"Neither was according to the rules. Dennis was irritated with himself and frustrated with the way the game was going.
"That's the trouble with strikers. When they try to tackle, it's usually a bad one. But, in the end, it's not a problem for us - it's a problem for him.
"It will be up to the referee to draw the line. I'm sure Dennis will be keyed up again on his return here but he's a very experienced player and he should be able to handle these sorts of situations."

I truly hope so... our CL hopes rest on this game. Draw is not enough, we must WIN.
We got such a tough group with Roma, Valencia, Ajax.. why didn´t we get lokomotiv, borussia (:)) or basel?
but it doesn´t matter, cause if you want to win the trophy - you have to be prepared to win every team you´re put up against.

Here's something about it.
I know PlanetFootball is not exactly the most reliable source, but I don't see why they should lie about this..
