How do you guys think the USA will fair in the world cup?

Can you do aswell as 2002? It would be great for football/soccer if there was a truely competitive USA team.

I think a lot of people will be happy just to get out of the group this time around.

Yep. Also seeing how we play Brazil if we go second, I think that could be as far as we go.

I'm being realistic about our chances as well...honestly, unless a miracle happens, the best we'd be doing is finishing second...where we'd likely face Brazil. While I don't think Brazil will win it this time around, I don't think the US will be the team stopping them either. My expectations for this WC are for the US to have a good showing and prove to most people that what happened in 2002 was no fluke. We do have a strong team, but a coach who makes some bonehead decisions at the wrong times, so it'll be interesting.

I think you can beat Italy definately, but the Czechs will be too strong can see them clean sweeping the group.
I think the USA will become stronger with every world cup they play and could be a major force in 10 years maybe.

I think we have the potential to do that. We have good young talent and a new league which was never really a force in the past.

If we can draw the Czechs in that first game, I think we get off on the right foot.

Really, Ghana will be the surprise and probably make or break game.

I think the US has the potential to come second in the group, but there's no way they take down Brazil. If I'm more honest, I see them as not likely to do that well though, I doubt they make it out of the group, and could easily be bottom of it. I really think this is the toughest first round group personally.

I think its the group of death as well, no matter what people say.

If the US doesn't at least draw with the Czechs I don't think they will have a chance. My feeling is the only way to advance is to draw both Italy and the Czechs and then beat Ghana advancing on goal differential.

I would be happy if they make it out of such a tough group. I just don't want them to finish with 0 points. If they do that it will be a long 4 years until the next cup.

******* tell me about it. That's probably my worst nightmare with the upcoming WC.

If people bait us now because the team is in North America and we aren't Mexico just wait if we tank out of the tournament. :laugh

Also add the inflated FIFA ranking too and that's a lethal combo.
However, keep the faith. :holy247

People tend to see their own groups like that. I'd personally say the Dutch group is the toughest one.

I think the US will be out in the first round, but I wouldn't be surprised if they make it, they can beat most teams in any given day, but that goes the other way around. In any case their group promises good moments.

I don't see why it'd be great for football to have a competitive US team, or any other team for that matter. I mean, the fact is that they are competitive now but it doesn't seem to affect the world of football.

Maybe, but I don't think its a "homer" call in this case. We clearly didn't have the hardest group in 2002 and this year I think its clearly between our group and that one.

I'd say the Czech Rep would go with Argentina, Netherlands with Italy (historically) and I'd say the US are better than Serbia & Mont, and Ghana are better than the Ivory Coast.

That's just me though, to each their own. We will find out in a few months anyways. :D

USA can win the group. stranger things have happened. look at the last WC, france didnt get past the group stage and senegal got to last 8! i dont expect us to win, but anyhting is possible in WC

Hard to say which group is tougher...TBH, I think Serbia and Montenegro could be this year's surprise team (since there's always at least one). They only gave up one goal in qualifying and the two times I watched them, they looked pretty solid at defense. Their offense isn't as good, but it doesn't necessarily need to be-so long as they tie two and win one, most likely they'd advance.

As for our group, I don't know too much about Ghana-they have some solid stars, sure...but three-four guys don't make the team. I saw the Ivory Coast play (and almost beat Spain), so I'd say they look pretty strong too. The one thing about those two teams though is that its a big unknown how they'll play at the world's biggest stage though-they have the talent, but experience does count for a lot as well.

I guess everyone will have their own preferences and all...but I'd give a slight edge to the Aregentina/Holland/Serbia/Ivory Coast group.

i dont think so. ivory coast got 2nd in ACN this year and have players liek kolo toure, eboue, drogba (who is good internationally), kalou, demel, kone.

ghana are good still tho with essien (overrated in my book) and appiah

True. I did forget about that. In that case I change my original assessment. :laugh
