I have been thinking of the option of Germany's left backs. Indeed, Germany is rich of players playing in left back position. If you look at the performance of Christian Schulz, he is really improving from game to game. Moreover, he has gained useful experience in the champions league and Germany's u-21. He can also play in midfield in promising manner. I remember when he was used as a substitute in Germany's 2-2 draw with Argegentina in last year's friendly match. Why doesn't Klinsman view his improving performance at Bremen. I don't however, mean that Lahm or Jansen are bad. But, sometimes the coach has to look at players who play regularly.

Less than a year ago the LB position was such a problem. Lahm was injured and Klinsi tried Ernst and Schneider at LB. Now Lahm is back and Jansen and Schulz look good.

Today the problem is CB

Lack of height. Don't know a lot about German football but doesn't Jansen fit the bill? Also height is not important if the left back is decent. Look at how many goal line clearances Ashley Cole has made.

hello,
yes it is not but in germany it is different because the left back has to help out the central defenders who are so bad and in that case you need height

So I take that no one sees Dortmund-Bremen from last month and Schulz being destroyed for 90 minutes by Odonkor ?

i stick with lahm, although he should be RB after WC , and left schulz jansen or another to fight for the LB spot.

Schulz is just an average BL player-I do not think he is a natural left back

Basically, if Hinkel and Arne stay fit, they'll be more than capable to be relied on. They have the potential but just lack form. Lahm is obviously a world class material, i dun think there is anything to do with his hright, he has just recovered from a serious injury and it takes time. i'll definitely stick with Lahm coz i know what he can do and what i can expect.

Same apply to Metze, Schweini,Poldi and even the current ou-of-form aaron hunt. Sometimes it may not be a bad thing for youngsters to experience such a slump. They can learn and that makes them world class players one day.

Lack of height? I think that is not an issue. Well, Roberto Carlos is not 6 ft but still he is among the best player in the world. In Germany I think Lahm is the best on that position. Another player is Tobias Rau but ... that's an old story. Agree with bastian, after the WC Jansen,Schulz or maybe the on-form Rau can fight for the LB spot. We need a player who is a left-footed on that area...

Tobias Rau.. ah haa.. where is he now? another one is Christian Rahn.. wonder what happens to him.. many more like Bierofka, Balitstch.. have a stint in the NT and then -pooff-,.. just gone like that..

I echo that thought, and would like to see how that would work!

I think it would work well. Lahm is great at lb but I dont like the fact that he has to cut back to his right all the time. Jansen wouldn't being left footed...question is can he defend well enough.

They are both offensive players, defensive play would be questionable but this is Klinsmann's style of play so hopefully it will work out.

True but I think Lahm is a very good defender as well...

I guess Klinsmann's strategy is the best defense is a strong attack.

Jansen looked good against France..I think he can handle it.

Lahm in the past was very good defensively true, I think it's just his form/injury that makes him look a little shaky at the back. He will get it back the more he plays.
Jansen is young and looks good, he will get nothing but better with age... just ask Gerry!

I think he is still solid in defense. I mean if you watch the Italy game...nearly every attack came down the right side, Lahm kept his flank very quiet for the most part. I think left midfield is more of a problem than leftback. Our sidebacks are quite good. I agree on Jansen, he looks very promising...his height is a nice plus. Didn't he play forward as well? Another plus...he can finish if giving the shot.

Actually, Jansen is quite versatile, he can play LB, LM, and LF.... :drinkbeer

Bastian, how would you rate his defensive abilities? I rarely see him play but liked what I saw...do you think he can handle lb?

The idea that Lahm should be RB seems very appealing to me. The guy is a natural Right footed wing. So why not bring him to the right flank. But he didn't play in that spot much, so it will feel wierd.
Jansen is OK but not great. Schulz isn't that type of player who can cover up for our asses during the WC finals. Rau is compleletly out of form (Armenia might relegate). Rahn is way old to be added by Klinsmann now. And he has no international experience.
